The foreword of the #SouthSouthRising: #SankalpAfricaSummit 2026 Report captures a shared view of what's needed next: stronger institutions, deeper partnerships and capital that moves with purpose.
@JohnMwendwaOGW, CEO of @InvestKenya_ , argues that South–South trade and investment corridors will be critical as emerging markets drive the next wave of global growth.
@tomwansa, CEO of @KENIAupdates and Host Secretariat of the Innovation Agencies in #Africa Network, makes the case for connected innovation ecosystems where institutions, knowledge and investment scale together.
Takehiro Yasui of @jica_direct_en reflects on why long-term, #patient #capital is essential to unlocking enterprise-led growth across Africa.
@carol_koech of the @EnergyAlliance reminds us that the challenge is no longer finding solutions—it's enabling them to scale across markets.
Ujjawal K of Energiva Ventures closes with a simple but important thought: South–South collaboration is about co-creating solutions, not transferring them.
The report builds on these ideas through the conversations, partnerships and commitments that emerged at Sankalp Africa Summit 2026.

Why do technically sound innovations fail? Why do useful inventions struggle to get adopted? Why do researchers overestimate user need?
Kicked off the day with a powerful session on design thinking facilitated by design thinking coach Stephen Kagwathi
The session walked participants through the five stages of the Design Thinking Framework; Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test highlighting that the process is iterative and that innovators can loop back at any stage. Two powerful tools were introduced: the How Might We (HMW) statement, which reframes commercialization constraints as opportunities and the Point of View (POV) Statement, which anchors solutions in the reality of a real adopter, buyer or decision-maker.
Stephen Kagwathi also highlighted the common traps that researchers fall into that is Analysis Paralysis, Solution-First thinking and prototype Discomfort. He also offered practical ways to push through each one.
Concluded the session with a powerful reframe on science asks what is true. Design Thinking asks what is useful, desirable and viable for this specific human, right now.

Who benefits from your innovation? Who is left out?
Day 3: R2C COHORT 4
For the first session with we focused on GEDSI an approach that helps us understand the importance of equal rights and opportunities for all people, regardless of social identity. It addresses the unequal power relations between social groups that cause exclusion and is key to creating conditions for people to live a life they value, where their needs are met and human rights are protected.
Here are the key highlights:
1.GEDSI Questions in the R2C Journey Every step of the commercialisation journey must ask:
Access - Who knows about it?
Who influences the process?
Participation - Whose views have been heard and included?
Benefits - Who benefits from the outcomes?
2.The GEDSI Continuum Every innovator operates on a spectrum from Exploitative to Neutral to Sensitive to Transformative. The goal is to move every innovation towards transformation actively addressing harmful norms, roles and relations and promoting equality and inclusion.
3.Just One Thing You do not have to do everything at once. Start with just one GEDSI action- consult low-income communities, create opportunities for persons with disabilities, or ensure your marketing reaches different market segments.

This morning, I had the honour of delivering a keynote address during the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation (STRI) for Society Week 2026 at the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC), where I joined my PS colleague from the State Department for Science Research and Innovation Prof. Shaukhat Abdurazak, PhD, CBS, alongside distinguished leaders, researchers, innovators, academia, development partners, and industry stakeholders in advancing the national conversation on the transformative role of science in society.
Under the theme “Igniting Innovation: Bridging Science for Sustainable Development,” I emphasized that science, technology, research, and innovation must move beyond laboratories and academic publications to directly address the everyday challenges facing our people. In an era marked by rapid technological advancement, climate challenges, food insecurity, unemployment, healthcare pressures, and digital disruption, science must become a practical tool for improving livelihoods, strengthening institutions, and driving inclusive development.
The Government remains firmly committed to positioning Science, Technology, Research and Innovation as a strategic pillar for national transformation under Kenya Vision 2030, the Fourth Medium Term Plan (MTP IV), and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Through these frameworks, we continue to prioritize innovation, industrialization, digital transformation, and knowledge-driven development as key enablers of economic resilience and sustainable growth.
I underscored the importance of aligning research and innovation with national priorities and societal needs. Scientific research must increasingly focus on practical solutions in agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, education, environmental sustainability, water management, energy, and public service delivery. Equally important is strengthening collaboration between government, academia, industry, and communities to ensure research outputs are translated into scalable enterprises, policy solutions, and measurable impact for citizens.
I also called for more inclusive innovation ecosystems that empower youth, women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities. Kenya’s youthful population remains one of our greatest assets, and we must continue investing in STEM education, digital literacy, innovation hubs, incubation centres, mentorship programmes, and accessible financing that unlock the immense creativity and entrepreneurial potential of our young innovators across the country.
As Kenya embraces the opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including Artificial Intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, big data, and advanced manufacturing, we must position ourselves not merely as consumers of technology, but as creators, innovators, and regional leaders in knowledge-driven development. Ultimately, the true measure of science is not the quantity of knowledge produced, but the quality of transformation delivered within society. Science must improve livelihoods, create jobs, strengthen healthcare systems, protect the environment, and support sustainable national development for the benefit of all Kenyans.

"No nation can reach its full potential while half its talent faces barriers."
Those words from Ambassador Caitríona Ingoldsby of Ireland hit hard at #stri4societyweek2026 today.
In her passionate address on gender inclusion in STEM, she challenged the outdated idea that science and technology are male domains and called for more women engineers, scientists and technology leaders in Kenya.
She reaffirmed Ireland's commitment to partnering with the Kenyan Government, private sector and academia to dismantle the barriers of gender, geography, financial limitation and the digital divide that still hold too many back.
And her closing message to Kenya's youth was direct and clear: your ideas matter, your leadership matters. Your future belongs in every laboratory, innovation hub and board.
