This week, we take you inside the KSRIC Herpetarium to introduce the medically important snakes housed at our facility.
Through this series, we will explore their characteristics, learn about their significance in snakebite envenoming, and understand why accurate snake identification is essential for prevention, awareness, and effective snakebite management.
Sensitisation Through Edutainment
Sensitization does not only happen in facilities and workshops but also through songs and stories passed down across generations. This is one of the ways we reach communities.

Today, we mark #InternationalSnakebiteAwarenessDay2026 under the theme "Disabilities from Snakebite Envenoming: The Hidden Crisis."
Pupils explored the risks they face walking to school and herding, bringing community beliefs and practices to life through folk songs, poems, skits, separating myth from fact, learning prevention and first aid and testing their knowledge in the Snakebite Spin-the-Wheel Challenge
No child should have their future changed forever by a snakebite.

In commemoration of World Snake Day, @MOH_Kenya through @K_SRIC @primateresearch — conducted a Snake Awareness, Identification and Safe Handling Training for Kenya Wildlife Service officers in Kajiado County.
By strengthening the capacity of frontline wildlife officers, this activity promotes safer human-snake interactions, improves snakebite prevention & response and support snake conservation -recognising that snakes play an ecological role and that awareness is key to reducing fear
This activity reflects our continued commitment to advancing public health, wildlife conservation and community awareness in the response to snakebite envenoming.

Thank you, Bwana PS, for visiting and highlighting the work we are doing towards solving the snakebite crisis in Kenya.

Replying to @Profshaukat
@primateresearch appreciating extraction of venom for antivenom. It is estimated in 🇰🇪 we have annual 20,000 snake bites, with up to 4,000 deaths and 7,000 serious disabilities. We need to produce our own antivenom to enhance efficacy. In Kenya, a single vial typically costs between KSh 4,700 and KSh 8,500. We need to fund for production and commercialization @koske_felix @MusaliaMudavadi @nacosti @nrfkenya @KENIAupdates @OfficePCS_KE
