Twitter won't allow me (successfully) add to this thread anymore. Possibly because the guy who built my car is now in charge.
This is not a conspiracy. It's just that my car breaks down a lot so I'm not surprised that "X" does too.

For me, Europe began in Ireland 🇮🇪.
Today at the conference in Dublin, I shared some personal memories. As a teenager, I visited Ireland several times through a programme for children affected by the Chornobyl disaster. I stayed with Henry and Marian Deane in Roscrea, County Tipperary.
I learned English here, and even a little Irish. I discovered another culture. But most importantly, I discovered another way of life.
I saw that people could speak freely. That they could disagree with their government without being afraid. I was too young then to understand what democracy really meant. But I could feel what freedom was. That is something you never forget.
Ireland helped shape me as a person, my values and my European identity. Long before I learned about the European Union, I experienced European values through ordinary Irish people. Through a family who opened their home to a girl from Belarus. Through neighbours who treated me as one of their own.
Ireland also taught me another important lesson: You can love your country, your language and your traditions while remaining open to the world.

@BrusselsAirport is an absolute clown show. People queueing for hours over last couple of days for passport control to get into and out of the country. Even for EU passport holders it’s a mess - old security machines and dilapidated systems.
The self-styled capital of Europe.
Flights now being delayed because so many people are stuck in passport control queues to get out of the country. Queues so long that they have started handing out water to the people in them.

Today, I learned that Australia is a land mass that broke off of Antarctica.
As a result, it didn't have robust fauna or earthworm ecosystems, so it doesn't have millions of years of soil compaction.
That's why all of it's lifeforms are venomous. 🧵
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Australia has ~1,000 native earthworm species despite splitting from Antarctica. Venom in snakes (not "all" lifeforms) stems from elapid radiation in isolation, not soil/earthworms (australian.museum/learn/animals/… discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts/w…).

The endless slaughter of Ukrainian and Russians must stop.
We should some sympathy for the poor Russian conscripts too. Those kids have no choice but to fight and die in drone strikes.

Ukrainians keep showing enormous courage in defending their country against Putin’s immoral and indeed evil efforts to conquer a neighbor. They have resisted now for four years and eight months and we should do all we can to help them.
Munster’s second half stats this season (despite their late try) are absolutely horrendous.
They are a handy enough first half team to be fair.

In my new piece for @TheAtlantic yesterday on Trump’s Russia - Ukraine negotiations I have a short section on how to deter Putin from escalating its shadow war against Europe. Three concrete ideas that may work— threaten to place air defense in western Ukraine, extend Ukraine’s use of Starlink into Russia, and in the event of a mass casualty event in Europe, designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. The last one we used successfully in 2024. All of these, if communicated privately, may given Putin pause. theatlantic.com/internationa…

What this shows is that kissing Trump’s ass always fails. He reacts only to pressure. In this case terrible US polling, screaming Republicans, and catastrophic damage being done to US defense companies

Top tip: If you’re going to have a discrete partnership with the CIA make sure it’s discreet.
And don’t enter into any partnerships with people who don’t understand the difference between discrete and discreet.
