🤔 Might this have anything to do with a rather important G7 presidential election happening next April/May...?

Sidenote: the minister didn't actually realise before we pulled him into the studio that he was about to do this on live TV. Fair play to him...
'The minister has very bravely offered to go through some of the charts from the budget' @dantomlinsonmp joins @EdConwaySky at the screen to talk through the numbers behind today's announcement trib.al/WOFfeba 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602

📽️Here's our mega screen on this year's mega Budget. LOADS of charts on what was, depending on how you look at it, either the biggest or the smallest Budget in modern history. But arguably the biggest story of all is what it says about the shocking state of UK living standards👇

How much is the government currently borrowing? And what does it all mean? Sky's @EdConwaySky unpicks the Chancellor's budget ⬇️

Two key snap charts on the Budget... 1) in sheer numbers of policies, it's the "busiest" Budget in modern history. 98 different scorecard measures(!) 2) BUT the average VALUE of those measures was the smallest on record. Every little helps? Or too much fiddling? Views may differ

All calm in the gilt markets so far this Budget (at the time of writing at least). UK govt bond yields actually trending down a little bit. But much depends on the numbers themselves, which land after the Chancellor's speech...

Chancellor on energy bills... "This winter, for 20 million households in council tax bands A-D… …I am announcing a £100 ‘Household Energy Payment’. Paid directly into people’s bank accounts to help deal with rising energy bills… …a £2.6bn scheme"

NEW On the basis of the numbers the Chancellor just read out in the House, the UK is set to borrow MORE in each of the next five years than previously planned

As expected, in his Budget the Chancellor @JohnHealey_MP uses some of the "headroom" against his fiscal rules. Down from £24bn to 15bn. Yet to be seen how much of that is giveaways and how much is down to higher interest rates and other economic changes...

Just giving this a wee nudge today...
✍️ Britain does have an economic model. It just happens to be a consumer website. I wrote something about the moneysavingexpert economy and why it's facing an existential crisis. And why this isn't just a UK issue... Have a read👇 edconway.substack.com/p/the-…

Because I spent much of the past eight days traveling I was able to use all the down time finally to read Ed Conway’s much-praised “Material World”, and really enjoyed it. Conway has a talent for digging deep into and explaining some incredibly complex stuff.

📈 We did a big data dive on the North Sea: is it really doomed to as steep a decline as everyone assumes? The answer is a bit more complex and interesting than you might have thought 👇
📽️ From Donald Trump to Britain's wind power trade body, there's a growing coalition calling for more drilling in the North Sea. Raising the question: if we DID encourage more exploration, how much oil & gas could we actually get? Our MEGA primer on the North Sea👇 Ps it's longer than usual, but it turns out this topic has SO MANY misconceptions. Time to put some of them right. Let me know what you think

📽️ And just the other week we made a whole film about the gas network and what happens (in this case quite literally) if we ran out of gas. Including access to critical infrastructure never filmed before youtu.be/sKDnZz4wypI?is=SAYh…

Energy Secretary @Miatsf has agreed that the regulator can grant consent for gas to be produced at the licensed Jackdaw field. Gas from Jackdaw is expected to start reaching British homes and businesses as early as the end of this month.
