🤔 Might this have anything to do with a rather important G7 presidential election happening next April/May...?
📽️Here's our mega screen on this year's mega Budget. LOADS of charts on what was, depending on how you look at it, either the biggest or the smallest Budget in modern history.
But arguably the biggest story of all is what it says about the shocking state of UK living standards👇
Two key snap charts on the Budget...
1) in sheer numbers of policies, it's the "busiest" Budget in modern history. 98 different scorecard measures(!)
2) BUT the average VALUE of those measures was the smallest on record.
Every little helps? Or too much fiddling? Views may differ
Chancellor's speech also reveals debt* will be higher each of the next five years than previously planned.
*as measured by their preferred measure, public sector non financial liabilities which isn't really what most economists would call "debt" but that's another matter
All calm in the gilt markets so far this Budget (at the time of writing at least).
UK govt bond yields actually trending down a little bit. But much depends on the numbers themselves, which land after the Chancellor's speech...
NEW
On the basis of the numbers the Chancellor just read out in the House, the UK is set to borrow MORE in each of the next five years than previously planned
📽️ And just the other week we made a whole film about the gas network and what happens (in this case quite literally) if we ran out of gas.
Including access to critical infrastructure never filmed before
