Because I spent much of the past eight days traveling I was able to use all the down time finally to read Ed Conway’s much-praised “Material World”, and really enjoyed it. Conway has a talent for digging deep into and explaining some incredibly complex stuff.

📽️ WHAT IF THE GAS RUNS OUT?
If the UK's gas supplies fail it turns out there's an emergency plan.
A strict hierarchy about who is cut off first: Europe, then power stations, then industry, then homes.

Just excellent: educational journalism at its very best. It should be compulsory viewing for all Members of Parliament.

Stunning piece from @antonhowes, who is the @EdConwaySky industrial detective of history. For eg I had no idea there were “600,000 barrels of refined white salt being produced in the Low Countries each year” by the 16th Century, 25% for herring alone!

Already a fascinating read from @EdConwaySky. His new book ‘Trade World’ explores the complex interconnections, dependencies, & chokepoints that make up the modern economy, & show through the stories of bread, clothes, & cars, that much of what we think of as new is indeed old.

UK growth upgrade for Q2 26 taking QoQ output growth to 0.5%, and an annualised pace of 2.4% during H1.
Very respectable and the fastest in the G7 during H1, and second fastest on a per capita basis.
The big boost compared to the first estimate was the impact of net trade, but also business investment up 5.2% YoY.

What made the British Empire the dominate naval and commercial force in the world was not controlling all the land masses on the globe, but controlling the key maritime chokepoints.
English Channel, Gibraltar, Malta, Suez, Cape of Good Hope, Aden, Hormuz & Singapore.
We are learning that lesson again today, as maritime chokepoints are now being contested.
