The underlying phenomena are well documented and, in a limited sense, real. The Greys are not visitors from another world. They are a species of smallfolk, distantly related to goblins, native to the Americas. Their magic is comparatively restricted. It permits short-range teleportation, the construction of various magical constructs including simple flying craft, and the ability to render humans unconscious or themselves invisible. Despite their unsettling appearance, their primary occupation is mischief. In the early period of European settlement they adopted beards and pointed hats to match contemporary images of gnomes and similar beings; they later altered their presentation as needed. Among Indigenous peoples they assumed the forms of various trickster figures. With Muggles they have achieved their greatest success by maintaining the extraterrestrial disguise. Grey society is tightly organized. They inhabit underground warrens excavated and reinforced by their own magic, typically governed by elected chief mating pairs. Separate groups trade or wage war with one another according to circumstance. Both Indigenous nations and later European wizards discovered that modest offerings of trinkets or food usually secured either non-interference or small favors. Subsequent trading agreements established the Greys as a protected class of Being within the Americas; they exchange constructs and minor magical implements for goods they value. They consume human popular culture with enthusiasm, though they frequently misunderstand its context. Statutes now prohibit Greys from interfering with humans and forbid wizards from employing Greys as proxies in private conflicts or pranks. Earlier arrangements of that kind escalated rapidly; during the Hatfield–McCoy feud, for example, both sides armed Greys with muskets, and numerous Greys attempted to pass as hillbillies—an impersonation that seldom succeeded. At present, occasional abductions still occur for amusement, but the practice is strongly discouraged by both Grey authorities and the Department of Magic. A number of individuals have instead entered commercial work in Hollywood.
