If the world is getting a little too much may I recommend the inexplicably obsolete word ‘latibulating’, from the 17th century? To latibulate is to find a cosy corner somewhere and hide in it.

This seems like a great time to reshare my favourite Sir Patrick Stewart performance, ‘What has the ECHR ever done for us?’ It’s just perfect in every possible way … including the ending 😂😂😂 RIP.

NEW: Ten years on, Prime Minister @andyburnham tells @campbellclaret & @RoryStewartUK that there was ‘clear’ Russian interference in the Brexit vote.
FINALLY after years of cover-ups & denials from the highest levels of the UK govt. That in itself deserves an inquiry.

Suella Braverman born here but not English 🤔
The fact she’s denying being English to please the racist voter base of reform shows how far she’s fallen.
Then accused Fiona Bruce of being facetious when she asked
🗣️how far back do you have to go to be English, 1066? 🤣

Loving @andyburnham speech today: so much new hope, so much better planning, so well delivered. From water to social care, from lease holders to scrapping VAT on energy bills…. it’s packed with brilliant ideas. It’s #LabourWinning @LabourParty @10DowningStreet Superb.

He doesn’t have all the means to bring it about, but so far this speech is the most comprehensive case for social and economic democracy we’ve heard from a Labour PM in the last 40 years. It’s significant because Burnham is the first Labour PM to entirely and avowedly say he wants to break with the Thatcher settlement.
The best written UK political speech of this scale in years. And passionately delivered. Labour’s NHS changed Britain for the better. The National Care Service will hopefully do the same @andyburnham
Loved BBC Secrets of the Bayeux Tapestry narr. by Michael Palin w. final words from @DavidOlusoga

Very sad to hear Bonnie Greer has died. A powerful wordsmith and artist, she was eloquent and exacting. A true life force. I will never forget her quiet fearlessness taking on Nick Griffin on Question Time. I will miss her mentorship, and her friendship. Rest in peace, Bonnie.

So sad to hear the news about Bonnie Greer.
Bonnie’s voice brought courage, humour and humanity to Britain’s cultural conversation. She inspired and opened doors for so many others. And she was great fun too - I will miss her friendship enormously.
My thoughts are with her loved ones.
Sad news just in. 🙏🏽
British-American Playwright and novelist #BonnieGreer has died aged 77. Her husband David Hutchins announced her death saying:
“It is with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved wife, Bonnie Greer, has died aged 77 after a brief illness.
“Bonnie was an acclaimed playwright, author, critic, cultural and political commentator whose intelligence, courage and distinctive voice made an enduring contribution to British cultural and public life."
Speaking in 2016 in the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter movement, Greer said: "When I wake up in the morning, I'm just myself. It's only when I leave the door that I become a black woman to the world."
She added: "I tell black women all the time, 'Don't apologise for yourself and keep your hair nappy. Make sure you are heard'."
Rest in Peace Bonnie Greer 💔

With the heroes of the @RNLI under attack again, I’m reminded of this passage from Bill Bryson.

ALT I had never really stopped to consider what an extraordinary thing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is. Think about it. A troubled ship calls for help, and eight people - teachers, plumbers, the guy who runs the pub - drop everything and put to sea, whatever the weather, asking no questions, imperilling their own lives, to try to help strangers. Is there anything more brave and noble than that? The RNLI - I looked this up later - is an organization run by volunteers, supported entirely by public donations. It maintains 233 stations around the coast of Britain and averages twenty-two call-outs per day. It saves 350 lives a year on average.
