Many of you are asking how you can help me in these final days before the election. My only ask is this: Spread the word about the threats to democracy and how we can fight back. Tell everyone to subscribe to Democracy Docket and share its content. demdock.com/4wbp1va

🇺🇦❤️ He could have spent billions on yachts, mansions, and a life of luxury. Instead, he chose to help Ukraine. His name is Howard Buffett. He is 71 years old and the son of legendary American billionaire Warren Buffett. Since Russia's full-scale invasion, his foundation has committed approximately $1.33 BILLION to helping Ukraine! And these aren't just numbers. Here's what that generosity means: 🍞 642 million meals funded for Ukrainians affected by the war. 🚜 823,000 hectares of farmland cultivated with support from his foundation, helping farmers whose equipment was destroyed by Russia. 🦾 $77 million for Superhumans, helping wounded Ukrainian soldiers and civilians receive prosthetics and rehabilitation. 💣 $167 million for demining, clearing Ukrainian land of deadly Russian explosives. 🏠 344,000 windows replaced in war-damaged buildings. 📚 $8.9 million to restore Kharkiv's Factor-Druk printing house after a Russian missile strike. And here's something even more remarkable: 🇺🇦 Howard Buffett has personally visited Ukraine 27 times! He visits devastated communities, meets farmers, and witnesses the consequences of Russia's war firsthand. In December 2023, his name was added to Kyiv's Walk of the Brave. But his greatest legacy isn't a monument. It's the lives saved, homes rebuilt, fields cultivated, and Ukrainians given hope again. ❤️ The world has plenty of wealthy people. Far fewer are willing to devote their wealth, time, and hearts to helping strangers thousands of miles away. Thank you, Howard Buffett. Ukraine will never forget your kindness. 🇺🇦🇺🇸 P.S. Snyder: I visited the front in Ukraine. Things look pretty good. A Russian breakthrough seems pretty unlikely, and having to mobilize is a bad sign for Russia. Ukrainians gain more territory than they lose and inflict many times more casualties. 1/

One of my favourite Legolas moments in the book was how he brought down a flying mount of a Nazgûl with a single arrow, in the middle of the night, completely nonchalantly. While the Fellowship was travelling down the Anduin, Legolas spotted a dark, winged creature approaching from the south. Armed with the bow gifted to him by Galadriel, he fired into the night sky and sent the creature crashing down near the eastern shore. Legolas couldn’t even identify what he had shot. When Gimli praised his shot, Legolas responded merely that he didn’t even know what he had hit. It was only in The Two Towers that Gandalf revealed he had killed the winged steed of a Nazgûl. The Ringwraith itself had survived. This event may have completely altered events had that Ringwraith continued pursuing them. Frodo would soon put on the One Ring to escape Boromir, while Merry and Pippin would fall into the hands of Orcs. Imagine a Nazgûl overhead during either encounter. (Art by Ralph Damiani)

Trump is drawn to Putin like a moth to a flame. It was only a matter of time before he was manipulated into betraying Zelenskyy and Ukraine once again. Putin, a disastrous Russian president, plays him like a fiddle. Trump’s actions will stain the USA’s reputation for generations.

Dolly Parton stories are my favourite @X subgenre right now. Literally all of them are fabulous. For most of us who never met her, it feels like you did. She was obviously one of those people whose public persona was the same as her private persona. Sunshine on legs.
Dolly Parton made the best chicken and dumplings I ever ate. On lunch break she would knock on my trailer door with melt-in-your-mouth dumplings, biscuits, gravy, green beans.Every day it was a southern feast. I had never seen an actor actually use the cooking facilities in their trailer before but she had it all going on. I still have Dolly’s Tupperware…

I’ve always loved the meaning Tolkien gave to the names of Narsil and Andúril. Each derives from Quenya. Narsil comes from NAR, meaning “fire,” and THIL, meaning “white light.” Tolkien explained that these represented the Sun and Moon, the great lights opposed to darkness. When the broken sword is reforged in Rivendell, Aragorn names it Andúril, “Flame of the West,” from andúnë (“sunset” or “west”) and ril(brilliance or glittering light). West accordingly refers to Númenor. (Via Tolkien Gateway) The films change this, Narsil isn’t reforged until The Return of the King, when Elrond presents it to a more reluctant Aragorn at Dunharrow as Andúril. This removes Aragorn naming the sword himself, which I believe adds more meaning. Narsil belonged to his ancestors and carried their history. Once reforged, Aragorn gives it a new name before carrying it into his own story.
