The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours First Nations, Inuit and Métis Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities. Established as a result of Survivors' advocacy and in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 80, September 30 became a federal statutory holiday in 2021. For more than a century, Indigenous children were forcibly separated from their families, communities, cultures, and languages through the residential school system.
