Researchers at NC State are using drones to collect crop data that used to be gathered by hand. AIRS is a drone that lifts out of a weatherproof box, flies a pre-set route over acres of fields, and docks itself; all launched from a computer in Raleigh, miles away.
Every week it produces:
+ Point clouds. A 3D model of the field to measure plant height.
+ Orthomosaics. Hundreds of overlapping photos stitched into one distortion-corrected image where every pixel has a real ground coordinate. Same plot, compared week to week.
+ Heat maps. Green is healthy, red is not. Infrared catches plant stress days before the eye can see it.
Autonomous systems like these are defined by how long the drone stays aloft, how much sensor it can carry, and how much that sensor can see: power, materials, and hardware working together.

Lyten has been selected as preferred bidder for the business of Morrow Batteries ASA, Morrow Technologies AS and Morrow Industrialization Center AS, under a memorandum of understanding signed on 21 August 2026 with the bankruptcy estates and Innovation Norway.
Dan Cook, Lyten CEO: "Lyten is committed to building a financially strong and scalable manufacturing base for batteries and energy storage in Europe, utilizing US and European technology, supply chains, and manufacturing sites. The Morrow team has built a business aligned with this strategy, making the assets a strong strategic fit for Lyten in Europe."
Lyten is evaluating the site as a Lyten Industrial Hub, combining battery manufacturing with upstream and downstream activity in the energy storage value chain and industrial work supporting AI data centers, mobility, and defense.
Conditions outside the estates' control still have to be met before the transaction can complete. If they are, Arendal would join Lyten's Industrial Hubs in Sweden and Poland, contributing to a "financially strong and scalable manufacturing base for batteries and energy storage in Europe, utilizing US and European technology, supply chains, and manufacturing sites."

The @WhiteHouse issued a new proclamation placing tariffs on imported drones, parts, and components, aimed at building out a domestic U.S. drone supply chain:
→ 100% on larger or thermal-imaging drones, docking stations, and critical components
→ 25% on smaller drones and other components
→ 10-15% for allied trading partners
→ A new Commerce onshoring program for U.S. drone manufacturing
Whatever one makes of the trade debate, the materials and batteries inside a platform are becoming as strategic as the platform itself. It is a shift @LytenInc has been building for: U.S.-made lithium-sulfur batteries, EU-made li-ion NMC cells, and our 3D printing filaments, adhesives, admixtures and sensors; all on an allied supply chain.

Researchers at @CarnegieMellon Robotics Institute is building #drone swarms that search collapsed buildings, flooded neighborhoods, and cave systems faster and more safely than human rescue teams. Tabib's team is shrinking and lightening airframes to fly farther and reach spaces larger drones cannot, all while size, weight, and power constrain everything onboard, from algorithms to sensors.
Paired with #AI, the swarms map hazards and scan victims for vital signs from a distance, work that matters most in the first 72 hours after a disaster. What a drone can do in the field still comes down to the materials it is built from: how much energy it carries, how little that energy weighs, and how light and strong its structure can be.

A 2 TW backlog of clean #energy and storage projects is waiting on #grid interconnection, well above the 1.37 TW installed in the US (@BerkeleyLab, "Queued Up").
The median project reaching operation in 2025 waited about 5 years, up from under 2 years in 2008.
Demand is not waiting 5 years. Behind-the-meter power paired with storage and grid-forming systems like Lyten's VMS is becoming the practical near-term option.

@LytenInc, @GZEROAdditive, LLC, Vixiv, and Bearcats Motorsports @RHS_ECO made a great performance team. Together, we achieved a 42% weight reduction and parts our partners called "incredibly strong."
At FSAE Michigan, one of the world's most demanding collegiate engineering competitions, Bearcats Motorsports (University of Cincinnati) put a Vixiv-optimized front wing endplate element, printed in Lyten PA1205 graphene-reinforced nylon on the G-Zero Additive 3D printer platform, to the ultimate test.
"One of our drivers accidentally hit the endplates at high speed... the only reason we avoided a black flag was that the Lyten PA1205 and Vixiv-optimized wing successfully held the broken part off the ground. This was instrumental in allowing us to finish the competition..." said Anshul Gumudavalli, Mechanical Engineering Lead, Bearcats Motorsports.
He continued, "The Lyten PA1205 material performed flawlessly... it survived every single event, proving to be incredibly strong while remaining exceptionally light. We were expecting it to take around 60-80 lbf, and it didn't budge once."

New @ESIAfrica analysis looks at battery storage's role in Africa's electrification goals. The proposed COP31 35×35 target aims for electricity to meet 35% of final energy demand by 2035, but access has grown just 2% a year over 13 years against a needed 8.7%.
Two models stand out: Mali's Fekola mine pairs 30MW solar with 17MW storage, now covering 70% of daytime demand. South Africa's Red Sands, at 153MW, is the continent's largest battery project.
Distributed storage paired with renewables offers reliable power without waiting on centralized grid buildout, relevant to @LytenInc's work in grid and microgrid energy storage.

Record heat hit the eastern US this month, and PJM (the largest US grid operator) dodged a new all-time demand record only by paying its biggest customers to power down.
On July 2, PJM hit 162 GW, its second-highest demand ever, staying under its 2006 record of 165 GW only by cutting large customers' load. NY and New England asked people to conserve as temps topped 100°F.
Grid operators had two options: burn more fossil generation, or ration power that already exists. Neither adds capacity.
Energy storage does. A battery charges off-peak and discharges into the peak—so a facility can ride through a system peak instead of getting curtailed, firing up a diesel generator, or eating steep demand charges.

From molecules to electrons: a new @DWS_Group report maps where the global energy system is heading. Across transport, buildings, industry and digital infrastructure, demand is converging on electricity.
The report describes electricity as "becoming the backbone of the global energy system," with demand projected to grow 3.6% a year through 2030. In 2025, the world added a record 814 GW of new solar and wind to meet it.
The binding constraint now sits downstream of generation. The report notes that 1,650 GW of renewable projects are already built yet unable to connect to the grid; clean power is being produced faster than the system can absorb and deliver it.
This is where energy storage becomes essential. Battery storage supports a constrained grid, firms the output of intermittent renewables, and provides the balancing capacity that baseload sources, including hydrogen, rely on. As electrification accelerates, battery storage moves to the center of the energy system.
Lyten makes the energy storage that supports this transition.

Coral reef restoration has long been slow work, done by hand one fragment at a time, while the scale of loss far outpaces it. According to @SmithsonianMag, roboticists are rethinking the approach with the Deployment Guidance System, the first automated underwater coral planter.
It is essentially an "ocean tractor" that can be crewed or run autonomously. The vessel uses a camera paired with AI to scan the seafloor, identify the right substrate, depth, and water flow, and drop a ceramic plate carrying a coral seedling. The whole sequence takes about half a second.
Over its lifetime, a single unit could plant a million seedlings at roughly a dollar each; existing methods run closer to eight. The vision ahead is a coordinated fleet: drones mapping reef health from above, submersibles scanning structure below, surface vessels directing the work.
Innovations like these show the value of a systems approach: better materials, better power, better sensors for better payoffs.

On 3 June 2026, the European Commission released its technology sovereignty package, spanning chips, cloud, and AI. A meaningful share concerns energy: plans to integrate data centers with electricity systems, create data center acceleration zones, and study siting new facilities next to renewable generation.
Building more compute in more places raises a direct question: how to add large electrical loads without straining the grids that serve them.
Locating compute next to its own power and storage addresses that constraint. Colocating energy, storage, and industry in one hub eases the load on shared grids and shortens the distance between where power is made and where it is used.

A team at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution published new work about there autonomous underwater robot called CUREE (Curious Underwater Robot for Ecosystem Exploration). This #AUV maps #CoralReef biodiversity hotspots at centimeter scale, offering conservationists a powerful new way to find and protect the ocean's most vital ecosystems before they're lost.
The trick is multimodal sensing; four hydrophones on extended arms with forward- and downward-facing cameras. Passive acoustics gives it a wide-area sense of biological activity, while the cameras provide close-range, species-level detail.
A critical element of research like this is enabling hardware: compact, pressure-tolerant housings, #energy-dense #batteries, sensitive hydrophone arrays, and onboard compute that can run perception models in real time. This is just one way that advancements in power and sensing make the next generation of ocean exploration possible.

Distributed energy resources and virtual power plants are emerging as one of the fastest, most affordable fixes for a US grid under pressure from data centers, manufacturing, and electrification.
A new @pewtrusts report finds the US will add 217 GW of DER capacity by 2028 (nearly equal to all US coal output today), and that VPPs can deliver peak power at 40-60% of the cost of conventional resources.
It's already playing out: Puerto Rico via grassroots adoption after Hurricane Maria, Australia via regulatory reform, Virginia via 2025 VPP legislation. Disaster, market, or policy.
Whether driven by disaster, market evolution, or proactive policy, the takeaway is the same: distributed storage and generation isn't just a clean energy story, but a story of speed, cost, and energy resilience.
