My 16-year-old daughter works at an ice cream parlor after school. Last Tuesday at 9:45 PM, she texted me two words: "Red light." Her 24-year-old shift manager had just informed her that the adult closer called out sick, so she was expected to stay until 1:00 AM on a school night to clean the grease traps and lock up the store alone. She told him she had an exam at 8 AM. He scoffed and told her: "If you aren't a team player, don't expect hours on next week's schedule." She froze. Teenagers are conditioned to obey authority figures, even when those figures are taking complete advantage of them. I walked through the glass front doors at 9:55 PM. I didn't yell. I walked straight up to the counter, looked the manager in the eye, and said: "Under state labor law, 16-year-olds cannot work past 10:00 PM on a school night. My daughter is clocking out at ten. If you have an issue with scheduling, give me the franchise owner’s direct number right now." He stammered, turned red, and told her she could go. We spend years teaching our kids to be polite, obedient, and respectful to adults. If you don't teach them where the line is and show them that you will physically show up to hold that line predatory bosses and bad situations will walk all over them before they even finish high school.

My stepfather raised me from age seven. When he died, his biological children arranged the funeral. They put me in the third row. At the service, the priest asked family to stand. I stayed seated. My stepsister turned and whispered, “You’re not really blood.” I nodded. I had heard that sentence all my life. Afterwards, a woman I did not recognise approached me. She was around eighty, small, with a cane. She said, “You are Daniel?” I said yes. She took my hand. “Your father talked about you every week at the market. He called you his proudest thing.” I told her she must be mistaken. He had never said it to me. She smiled sadly. “Men like him don’t say. They tell strangers.” She gave me a small box.
