48 years ago, on February 22nd 1978, the first GPS satellite was launched into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. GPS had been conceived of years earlier by U.S. Air Force officer Bradley Parkinson, a native Minnesotan. 41 years after that historic launch, another Great Lake State native (this one from Michigan), @FoundTheSpace would co-found @XonaSpace, a company looking to carry Bradley Parkinson's torch into the future. Two days ago, Xona launched six of its satellites into orbit, enabling Pulsar, a commercial positioning, navigation and timing, or PNT, service designed to complement or back up GPS. Pulsar will run where GPS walked: a service that is less susceptible to spoofing and jamming, that can work indoors, and one that can provide centimeter-level accuracy. GPS changed our world, and Pulsar is poised to change it again. Today, Xona is announcing their $250M Series D round, led by legendary Midas List investor (and SpaceX board member) @FutureJurvetson of @VenturesVc with participation from @chadbyers and too many other amazing investors to name. Congrats to Brian Manning, Tyler Reid, Adrien Perkins, Christina Youn and the entire Xona team pictured below, whose names adorn one of those six satellites now orbiting the Earth on hitting these major milestones. Today, LA is one of the leading hard tech hubs in the world, with some of the best hard tech investors. AVLIS: a clear winner - when we first met @cjarrott and Jake Peterson at @Hexium_Inc they were focused on solving the fuel bottleneck for nuclear fusion, but they were also bothered by the shortage of enriched uranium for nuclear fission and saw--as the Science article from 1985 below states--their technology, AVLIS could be a winner to solve this challenge.
