Lots more to say on this, & i disagree with the framing here (headline esp.) but appreciate @elliew0lfe giving myself & other concerned grad workers, students , & faculty the opportunity to explain some of our opposition to this bill
A proposed Maryland bill meant to curb hate and discrimination at colleges and universities failed to make it to the governor's desk. But why? My latest story explores the tension between curbing antisemitism and supporting free speech on college campuses: thebaltimorebanner.com/educa…

shout out to the @kaymtye lab for their beautifully commented code, it really helped me build a data collection workflow (and @jeremydelahanty for pointing me to it )

Code is often written without annotation, modularity, and generality. It often consists of scripts rather than as functions, with important parameters hard-coded, making reproducibility and new applications hard. Sometimes those scripts don't even run.

I noticed ppl disregarding the NYMag piece bc it focused on Huberman’s personal life, not bad science & harmful misinformation he propagates. So I wrote a thing. @slate: “So, Should You Trust Andrew Huberman?” slate.com/technology/2024/03…

Daniel Kahneman, our greatest scientist of mistakes, has died. After drafting the manuscript for Thinking, Fast and Slow, he paid colleagues to provide anonymous advice on whether to abandon it.

1 I have learned that the primatologist Frans de Waal has passed away. He was a giant in academia and beyond. scholar.google.com/citations… As a minor tribute, let me discuss one of his lesser-known concepts: anthropodenial.

We have no idea what these are. Martin made the images off a slide salvaged by Nico from a shuttered lab. If you can help us identify them, let us know!

Perhaps it’s worth mentioning now, given the news of three Palestinian students that were shot in Vermont while wearing their keffiyehs (same scarf I’m wearing here, which I’ve worn for years), that I recently was spat at while walking home from MIT wearing it and told “fuck you”
Postdoc Ubadah Sabbagh’s journey from Syria to MIT has been marked by determination, courage, and curiosity. “For me, a scientist is a person who is not only in the lab but also has a unique perspective to contribute to society,” he says. mitsha.re/SSkF50PRZiM
