Great news for the Canadian tech ecosystem! Kudos to the government for making the Canadian ecosystem the best place to build the future 🇨🇦 💪
Budget 2026 is a budget for builders. Build Canada welcomes Budget 2026 as the first federal budget in over a decade to recognize and reward entrepreneurship as a key driver of economic growth. The government has adopted the core elements of tax reforms widely recommended by builders and entrepreneurs across Canada, while also beginning to take measures to improve competitiveness and government efficiency. This budget changes the math for founders and early employees. A Canadian who sells a company and starts the next one now has more reason to do it here. That is how a country creates a strong innovation ecosystem and gets a generation of repeat builders to stay and build here. What we welcome: 1. Measures to incentivize and reward entrepreneurship, including: > The Canada Growth Incentive, a new tax exemption on up to $15 million in capital gains earned from successful eligible investments for Canadian builders. > The enhancement of the small business rollover to allow increased deferral of taxes on capital gains when proceeds are reinvested in another Canadian small business. > The expansion of the SR&ED tax incentive program to include certain commercialisation expenses. 2. Measures to increase competition, including: > The Cabinet Directive on Regulatory Competitiveness and Red Tape Reduction. > Efforts to make it easier for consumers to switch providers by expanding data portability rights to additional sectors, including telecommunications and air transportation. > Strengthening Competition Bureau investigations. 3. Measures to improve government efficiency, including: > The establishment of Digital Transformation Canada to lead the adoption of AI across the public service. > The establishment of a Fellowship Program through Build Canada Exchange to recruit outside expertise to support priority projects. > The Cabinet Directive on Regulatory Competitiveness and Red Tape Reduction to put Canada’s long-term competitiveness at the centre of how federal regulation is developed. > Efforts to streamline the delivery of federal financing. What still needs work: > Public debt. The budget projects a deficit of $65.3 billion for FY 2026-27 and debt-to-GDP of 39.9% rising to 40.1% by 2030-31. Public debt charges are $60.2 billion for FY 2026-27 and will reach $85.5 billion by 2030-31 — more than Ottawa will spend on the Canada Health Transfer and the fastest growing budget line item. While some may argue there is fiscal room to absorb this, long term interest rates are unpredictable and our fiscal position would be more resilient with a reduced deficit. > Old Age Security reform. OAS costs are pojected at $89.4 billion this year and still leaves 400,000 seniors in poverty. Moving the recovery threshold to $100,000 of household income would save $15-16 billion a year and end seniors' poverty with $2 billion of it. The budget leaves this untouched. > More aggressive tax reform. A comprehensive review of the tax system is needed to further identify ways to simplify our tax code for individuals and businesses.

Valavan and Vithu spent years inside @cerebras designing chips and the models that run on them. They learned that the cost of running AI is actually a design choice, not a law of physics everyone just accepts... so they built Exstill around the opposite of how it's usually done. Instead of taking a GPU and squeezing a model onto it, they design the silicon and the model together, for the actual workload at hand. The first product is Polyglot-DC1, a co-processor that sits beside a GPU. It runs the small models doing a request's real work, the ones drafting, screening, running agents, reasoning in real time. By their own benchmarks against NVIDIA's B300, it's 110x faster per token and uses 690x less energy. This means that agent turns that take seconds on a GPU take milliseconds here. Big congrats to Val/Vithu on taking the plunge and the @GoldenVentures team is happy to be an early supporter. The team is hiring, if you're interested please see details below!
We're coming out of stealth. The limits of AI compute are inherited, not fundamental. At Exstill, we're designing AI models and silicon together to push inference efficiency toward its limits. Our first step: the frontier model's co-processor. Founded by Valavan Manohararajah and Vithu Thangarasa (@vithursant19), we've been building toward this moment for a while, and we're excited to finally share what we've been working on. We're just getting started. Explore what we're building: exstill.ai

Enough said. Choose wisely on October 26.
It is one of the most incredible own goals I have ever seen in politics. You have to watch the clips to believe them. It's the culmination of two months of debates between @BradMBradford and @oliviachow when last night, mayor Olivia Chow revealed something so vital about her own leadership. She said: "At some point, you need to take a stand. You have to say this is what I believe in. Yes or No. It is tough, but that's what leadership is about." Here is what Olivia Chow believes in, apparently.

Replying to @BradMBradford
@BradMBradford just nails it! Toronto is an amazing city. But if you think there is nothing you should do to improve it or if you think it’s not patriotic to seek to improve it, then the problem is with you. Brad has the energy and drive to make Toronto an even better place!
Brad Bradford raised concerns about the state of a city that he says “is stuck” during the CP24 debate. “We are stuck in traffic, we are stuck feeling less safe and we are stuck paying more and getting less,” he says.

Canada just announced its new National Council on Artificial Intelligence. I'm not one to carry water for the government but take a look at the people around the table: • @professor_ajay — U of T professor; founder of Creative Destruction Lab and NextAI. • @Yoshua_Bengio — Turing Award winner; pioneer of deep learning; founder of Mila. • @FidlerSanja — co-founder & CEO of Veeda AI; former VP of AI Research at NVIDIA; co-founder of Vector Institute. • @JohnGrisham — President & CEO of CPP Investments. • @ghadfield — Johns Hopkins professor specializing in AI alignment, governance and law. • @JordanJacobs10 — co-founder of Radical Ventures, Vector Institute and Layer 6 AI, which was acquired by TD. • EricLamarre — MIT lecturer; former head of McKinsey Technology & AI in North America; co-author of Rewired. • @vpisano_mila — President & CEO of Mila, one of the world’s major AI research institutes. • Senator @tompitfield — founder of Data Sciences; technology entrepreneur and former Principal Secretary to PM Carney. • Jody Thomas — former National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister and former Deputy Minister of National Defence. • Louis Vachon — former CEO of National Bank; now Operating Partner at J.C. Flowers. • Michelle @zatlyn — co-founder & President of Cloudflare. • Patrick Pichette — former Google CFO; now CEO of Digital Transformation Canada. That is a very high concentration of experience across frontier AI research, commercialization, capital, financial services, technology infrastructure, government and national security. Great to see them all stepping up for Canada.

Folks - we have a race and it’s tightening. Olivia Chow’s lead cut to 6% over Brad Bradford. Chris Alexander’s share of 8% more than the difference. With margin of error, it’s becoming too close to call. mainstreetresearch.ca/post/t…

A legit rising star company in Toronto
Five years ago, as a computer science student at Waterloo, I was told the only way to build world-class products was to move to the US. I ended up co-founding Float here in Toronto instead, and today we're growing our engineering team by more than 25% to rebuild Canada's financial infrastructure for Canadian businesses. If you're an engineer who wants to build world-class products on home soil, I'd love to meet you. Our open roles are in the comments.

Toronto, this is not an election we can let pass us by. 29 days. Mark your calendars: October 26. 🗳️ We need a huge voter turnout. Every neighbourhood. Every generation. Every eligible voter. Pay attention. Get engaged. And vote. Complacency is not an option this year.

couple neat things you can do on Space: - extract files in the cloud - work with 10TB on a mac with only 256GB - compile an app - have an agent edit a video or execute a complex task - store/ retrieve artifacts instantly all things that were never possible before on something like dropbox or gdrive

Toronto is stuck. Taxes are up. Transit is still late. Young people are leaving. Food bank use is soaring. Toronto hasn’t come close to its potential. I’ll freeze taxes in year one, demand value for every dollar, guarantee on-time transit or refund your fare, and work to make our city safer. If you want to change the city, you have to vote to change the mayor on October 26th.
