After 188 years, Australia’s most famous department store has collapsed into administration for the first time in its history.
Staff were told this morning the board had appointed voluntary administrators from McGrathNicol.
Its lenders immediately installed FTI Consulting as receivers.
The trigger? The private equity owners couldn’t strike a deal with major landlord Scentre Group on store closures and the rent bill.
Update on store closures and job losses expected later this week.
188 years. Two world wars. Multiple recessions. The GFC. None of it killed David Jones.
Albanese’s Australia did.
High rents. Crushing costs. An economy strangled by Labor’s inflation, energy prices and policy chaos.
