🆕 on @airstreetpress: we delve into the murky world of frontier model economics, asking whether bigger, badder, and faster really is the future for most applications.
Some highlights below 🧵
In hindsight, Miami wasn’t the best choice of destination to “touch keyboard”. Have been able to find some cool spots though: – at Miami Beach, FL
Enjoyed this paper critiquing the anthropological basis of Girad’s scapegoat mechanism & mimesis theory more broadly.
“…his whole theoretical edifice is shown to be without foundation & simply collapses”

A poster dismissively using Krugman’s fax quote is a great razor for understanding if they’re intellectually honest or not
Imagine not understanding the context to why such a low-effort statement was made, & then using this to ignore the perspective of the best brains in economics ever—ngmi
I love this engineer-mindset description of a human as a human. Does anyone know of any similar attempts at defining a physical office as a technology?
I’m in Miami until March 5th—please help me classify its message properly! Meet-ups, cool spots, people I should meet reccs very welcome
Pondering the @PaulG “Cities & Ambition” question has become one of my favourite things to ponder when travelling. For ambitious people, what message does the city send?
E.g. NYC: “make more money”, Cambridge: “be smarter”, Paris: “do things with style” (paulgraham.com/cities.html)
...or if anyone wants to come on our road trip to watch the March 1st Atlas V launch from the beach

Stockholm 🇸🇪
I’ve not spent enough time there to say (visited late 2020, when people were even less social than usual).
Interested in others thoughts, as it might help solve the mystery behind their tech chops (patrickcollison.com/question…):
@arnaudschenk speculated that Berlin is “be more weird”, I think this gets at the vibe, a lotta ambitious people are more weird there.
...but again it's not deliberate. Definitely something there though.
.@PatrickC (iirc) put London as “be more cosmopolitan”. Goes against the grain of Brexit (putting aside Singapore-en-Thames’ers), but I think this definitely is part of it, e.g.
Clive James’ “The City of Cities” quote: youtu.be/djo7zb1N_0A?t=2766
Fun quote from Private Eye 1771:
.@edmtthws says London is “do things ‘properly’”, being a gift (strong rule of law, norms etc) and a curse (social dynamism).
I like this, as it captures Paul’s aristocracy point, but it lacks the international aspect which I think is key.
