Tanzania’s fisheries value chain contributes 2.2% to the national GDP. The MSMEs that drive it operate businesses backed by tangible productive assets and serve established markets and buyers. Under the Fisheries Sector Master Plan 2021/22–2036/37, the government aims to increase the sector’s contribution to GDP to 10% by 2037. Achieving this goal will require increased production, processing, exports, and investment across the value chain.
Is the financial sector ready to help unlock this potential?
This article explores initiatives aimed at enabling the financial sector to better serve fisheries MSMEs, unlocking financing opportunities, and supporting the sector's growth. It also highlights the enactment of the Secured Transactions Act, a key regulatory reform with the potential to transform access to finance by opening new collateral options and creating greater lending opportunities for fisheries MSMEs.
