I'm finding it very hard to comment on events in the Middle East. The indifference and even enthusiasm towards the indiscriminate bombing of Arabs and Muslims speaks to something deeper and dark. It never went away. But I never thought I'd see it presented so unapologetically.

lol you guys claim to be tough but get rattled when you see a Palestinian flag or pin. Our existence bothers you and is a reminder of your crimes. We're not going anywhere. Such a joke 😂 free Palestine all day everyday

"Gazans." Not Hamas. Not Islamic Jihad. "Gazans."
The constant attribution of collective guilt as justification for collective punishment by people with actual power is obviously far more dangerous than offensive chants by protesters, but receives a tiny fraction of attention.

When Israelis accuse Palestinians of bringing up their kids in a culture of hate, and of brainwashing them with propaganda about their enemies, there’s a lot of projection going on:
Palestinian teacher (with Israeli citizenship) Sabreen Msarwi was suspended from teaching after she attended a (police-approved) Nakba Day march. Despite her suspension, her "charming" students still organized a "protest" against her at school. In the video they can be seen chanting again and again "May your village burn".
The student who posted it captioned: "POV: your Arabic teacher is a Palestine supporter so you did a demonstration against her".
The TikTok post received 41.7k likes.
This happened at Rishonim School in the central town of Ganey Tikva.

My colleague in Rafah said today that she woke her 6-month-old baby up in the middle of the night to play. With the heavy bombardment, she thought it would be their last night alive: "If this would be my last night at least I got the chance to hug my daughter for the last time."

Will the “go back to Gaza” chants get as much coverage as the one guy who shouted “go back to Poland”?
I think we all know the answer.

Has @POTUS or @SenFettermanPA or @SenJackyRosen, who have been busy commenting on Columbia, said anything about any of these statements - openly bigoted, violent, genocidal statements - not from random college students but from actual GOP lawmakers with power? If not, why not?

There's a striking silence on this matter from liberals and centrists who claim to cherish free speech, with a few notable exceptions (credit to @bendreyfuss for being principled on this).
USC announced that valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s commencement speech has been canceled, stating it was “necessary to maintain the safety of our campus and students”
‘I am surprised that my own university has abandoned me,’ Tabassum said in a statement

The force of condemnation from our govt and the response from Netanyahu are only possible because these weren’t Palestinian civilians and these particular aid workers were tied to a high profile humanitarian. Otherwise there would have been more drivel about “the most moral army”
The Israeli military has admitted a "serious mistake" in the killing of seven food aid workers.

This part jumped out to me. A rare and honest admission from a (former) U.S. official on how folks in Washington - especially Biden - empathize with Israelis in a way they simply don’t (can’t?) with Palestinians. Explains much of our current predicament.
New Interview: I talked to former Middle East peace negotiator Aaron David Miller about the contradictions of Biden’s Israel policy, and why American leaders are so reluctant to cause conflict with Israel. newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/b…

So what will the Israelis say now? That @WCKitchen are terrorists too?
Where does this end?
NEW
Palestinian media organizations are saying that Israeli air strikes killed five aid workers, some of whom are foreign nationals, from @chefjoseandres’s World Central Kitchen.
The videos being distributed show medical workers holding up their passports which include Australia, Poland, and the UK.
The Israeli government has not commented yet on this matter.

UNRWA: The destruction inflicted on the Gaza Strip has resulted in the formation of approximately 23 million tons of rubble.
It will take years to remove the debris and dispose of unexploded ordnance.
Homes, schools, clinics, and other civilian infrastructure have been affected.
The lives of over 2 million people have been devastated.

People are more upset at an Oscar speech about empathy than an entire truckload of life-saving aid being turned away because it contained….scissors.
#Gaza: an entire population depends on humanitarian assistance for survival. Very little comes in & restrictions increase.
A truck loaded with aid has just been turned back because it had scissors used in children’s medical kits.
Medical scissors are now added to a long list of banned items the Israeli Authorities classify as “for dual use”. The list includes basic and lifesaving items: from anesthetics, solar lights, oxygen cylinders and ventilators, to water cleaning tablets, cancer medicines and maternity kits.
The clearance of humanitarian supplies + the delivery of basic & critical items need to be facilitated & accelerated.
The lives of 2 million people depend on that, there is no time to waste.
