The Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea seeking restoration of a beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari temple, part of the Khajuraho group of monuments in Madhya Pradesh.
The petitioner argued that the refusal to restore the idol violated devotees’ fundamental right to worship. The Court said that the matter fell within the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India.

According to the Talmud (Mishnah Sanhedrin 60b), one who worships idols (avodah zarah) is executed by stoning. This covers typical worship of the idol, plus acts like slaughtering an offering to it, burning incense, pouring a libation, bowing, or declaring "You are my god." Lesser acts like hugging or kissing it incur only a prohibition, not capital punishment.
