NEW Why did a judge impose a community sentence on a 14-year-old boy who stabbed a girl ten times in a terrifying, premeditated attack? Footage shows him chasing her around a store in Cirencester, where he also stabbed a shopkeeper. Finally, after 5 weeks, I’ve been sent transcripts of the court proceedings. * It’s clear the judge’s priority was the boy’s “rehabilitation” & managing future risk. * The judge did not appear to consider the need for deterrence or punishment. * The judge was “deeply unhappy…astonished” the boy had been held in a secure children’s unit for 3 months after admitting guilt & released him on bail. * When bailed the boy did not return home until early hours when meant to be under curfew & so couldn’t be tagged straight away * A youth offending team officer expressed concerns about the eventual sentence - a referral order - because it doesn’t include tagging/curfew requirements * Court heard about boy’s interest in disturbing films, his unpredictability & how he “craved” custody All in all, what emerges is a far from satisfactory sentencing process, containing some rather flippant remarks from a judge who appeared determined to avoid imposing custody from the outset. Her right to oppose their proscription has not been violated. She has been vocal in her opposition and has faced no legal repercussions for it. She does not have the right to fund them. “You lot” seem to struggle to understand the difference between speech and financing.
Replying to @NBC789
She also has the right to oppose their proscription, as was granted to the founders in July, and which has resulted in an appeal going to the Supreme Court next month. You lot like to leave that bit out, though.

Where is the @NewStatesman's campaign for the freedom of speech of the Batley Grammar School teacher? How many celebs signed that open letter?
Replying to @alexmassie
And if you really want to talk about speech-suppression, the case of the teacher in Yorkshire who has spent the last five years in hiding is a much better subject for discussion.

Her speech is absolutely not being suppressed. There is nothing she has said or written which she cannot legally publish. Everything Salman Rushdie went through was for the words that he wrote. This isn’t comparable in the slightest. Generally it’s illegal to fund the perpetration of crime. For example, it’s illegal to buy goods that you think are probably stolen, or to give someone money when you know they plan to use it to buy a weapon. Equally, it’s illegal to give money to a proscribed terrorist organisation, because there’s a good chance it will be used to carry out a crime. Rooney is free to publish her books in the UK, exactly as they are written. If the signatories disagree with the proscription of PA then they should make that argument, but they’re too intellectually cowardly to do so. But censorship this is not.
Replying to @Dublinmarti @NBC789
If you call it censorship or not does not matter but the fact is that her speech is being suppressed. No one can deny that.

Polygamy is illegal in the UK. Yet our welfare system pays out benefits to multiple spouses. Conservatives @RicHolden helped introduce legislation to stop this today.

Weird framing. There is no ban on Sally Rooney books. She is not allowed to fund a terrorist organisation. She has chosen to withdraw her books for sale rather than not give the proceeds to Palestine Action. There are many legitimate charities she could support instead.
OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

Cliveden House burnt down in 1849. The architect behind Parliament rebuilt it in two years. Now, Parliament has spent over a decade just planning its own repairs. What happened to the country that built things? 👇

‘Good things,’ wrote Roger Scruton ‘are easily destroyed, but not easily created.’ He had in mind the ‘collective assets’ of ‘peace, freedom, law, civility, public spirit and the security of property’ but he might equally have been writing about architecture. Yesterday...

As someone young, my whole life journalists appear to mostly be concerned with writing haughty pieces that be like: "Law and Order? Uhh sure normal people might be better off, but what about murderers and rapists?"
Whew, lad. That's quite the headline.

Utterly appalling, as is the cheering as the tower fell. France’s reputation as a civilised country to visit is also going up in smoke. A tragedy on many levels. 👇

Meet Imam Yasin Munye of the Hackney Islamic Community Centre, who can be seen here telling listeners to discipline their wives “by lightly hitting them to show who is in charge”. The Mail investigation revealed shocking evidence of imams endorsing physical violence against women for “disobedience” or refusing sex. I have written to the Director of Public Prosecutions asking whether he intends to pursue prosecutions — and, if not, why not? A thread 1/9:

🚨 NEW: A man in Bradford has been found to have attempted to rape a homeless woman who was dying or already dead in a tent. A judge has ruled that he is unfit to plead due to having such a low IQ. • Bradford Crown Court heard Hassan Shah, 26, of Edderthorpe Street, was captured on CCTV entering the tent on Kirkgate on the morning of 8 November. • He lay next to the unconscious woman and pulled down her clothing without trying to communicate. The prosecutor said she did not move because she was dying or dead. • She died from synthetic cannabis and alcohol, unconnected to Shah. • A judge had ruled he was unfit to plead because of low IQ and a learning disability, so he was not in court. • The jury unanimously found he “did the acts” of attempted rape and attempted assault by penetration. Sentencing is adjourned until December for reports. • Because he is unfit to plead he cannot receive a prison sentence. The judge will decide between a hospital order, supervision or discharge.
