Is it ever possible to take annual leave as an academic? The kind of annual leave where you don't have to deal with anything work related because you're on annual leave? Asking for a friend.... #AcademicChatter @AcademicChatter @academicvoices

Lots of complex factors can influence a student's experience at university. There is still work to do to better understand Black students' support needs and experiences.
We can do better.

It's not okay to offer funding where the recipient uses their own money first and is reimbursed later. This barrier puts serious pressure on those in less privileged positions. Many struggle (silently) or lose out completely. Reduce inequity by offering resources up front.

MRes:
“you need to pay £750 up front” “but I don’t have it, I haven’t got my funding thru yet”
“can’t you just borrow it?”
“No, I can’t as it goes. I’ve been a student for 4 years, I’m skint”
Also found out what “bench fees” are.
Post grad academia sucks if you don’t have £££

Replying to @HannahtheOT
Just to add to this - while I was welcome most phases of my training (didn’t eventually make it due to mental health issues), but I was not treated well by a number of qualified because I’m blind and use a guide dog for mobility. Was very disappointed as thought I’d be accepted.

Your academic journey is YOURS. It's unique, valuable and worthy. Remember, comparison is the thief of joy. Stay focused on your own path.

Imposter Syndrome is not a reflection of your inadequacy. It often stems from high expectations, fear of failure, or comparisons with others. Remember, you have achieved so much to be where you are today. You deserve to be here.
