Hannah Peaker from the @NEF explains that if you equalise capital gains tax with income tax so you tax wealth at the same rate as work, along with sorting out some of the problems with CGT, some estimates say you could raise £19.7 billion a year.

Disappointing news on capital gains tax today: the Chancellor has ruled out raising CGT rates at next week’s Budget. But he doesn’t appear to have ruled out reforms to the tax base, so there’s still room for progress. thetimes.com/article/b259153…

🚨 BREAKING 🚨 Chancellor Healey rules out CGT rise. That's bad news for a former Mayor of Manchester who famously once said “we have overtaxed labour and undertaxed wealth." Our thoughts? 👇🧵1/4 theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

THE POLITICIANS MOST CERTAINLY HEARD US Thanks to our supporters, who showed up in huge numbers yesterday in Westminster demanding a cost of living budget!

Very disappointing news here: rejecting the chance to raise £19.7bn from raising Capital Gains Tax to help fund badly-needed cost of living support for households would be a historic mistake at the Budget.

TODAY IS THE DAY COLA are in Westminster fighting for a future we can all afford, starting with a cost of living budget in two weeks time. The reasons that we are here couldn't be clearer.

Hi @jreynoldsMP, I’m an economist who's come round to rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high
.@AyoCaesar: "The one thing the govt could do to improve the lives of young people is introduce some rent controls" @jreynoldsMP: "No economist supports rent controls" There you have it. Are you a young person trapped paying exorbitant rent? The Labour govt says f**k you.

As inspiring as today's speech was, the real test will be whether the chancellor can keep pace with Burnham’s ambition in the budget. That means being unafraid to raise resources by tackling glaring inequalities in our tax system, where wealth and windfall profits are privileged

Wow. At @nef, we've been waiting 40 years for a prime minister to say we need to ‘build a new economy’. @andyburnham's diagnosis of the mistakes of the last four decade – privatisation, deindustrialisation and losing control of our essentials – was spot on. Yet... /2

There is a lot of diplomatic grind ahead to sweat our aid and other assets as hard as we can. I’m interviewed in the Guardian about my @NEF speech on the five securities I will focus on in my @FCDOGovUK role.

Tune in to hear me and some very smart economists talking about how we gave away an immense amount of public wealth to international financial insitutions, and in return got under-investment and rising energy bills.
Since 1990, we've lost £200 BILLION to private shareholders through privatisation. In Episode 4 of SHOCKWAVE, we explore the privatisation of our energy system and ask what the long-term impact of this transformation has been.

Great new mini series on the history of energy crisis in the UK, and what we can learn from them, by @NEF - which I had the pleasure of being interviewed for! open.spotify.com/episode/1s8…

Pleased to see the publication of my last report at @NEF, written with @TCStephens We found evidence that the rise in health-related inactivity may have been partly driven by the historic growth of precarious work, including zero-hours contracts 👇
Our latest analysis found that workers in poor-quality jobs are 3x more likely to drop out of work. And the biggest factors pushing people out: insecure work and a lack of autonomy in the workplace.

There's lots of discussion today on NEETs, welfare and employment policy - including a welcome PM announcement on ramping up vocational education in schools, as part of a serious drive to reverse the UK's post-Covid labour market trends.

If Andy Burnham really wants 'growth in every postcode' Heathrow expansion is not the way to do it! Use the money you would spend on airport expansion on improving train connections across the country.
Our new analysis: Heathrow expansion would mean taking jobs away from other regions in the UK - over 15,000 by 2050. By the government's own assessment, the economic case for expansion doesn't add up. theguardian.com/environment/…

The UK can’t just firefight its way through a fractured world. An @andyburnham-led government has a chance to move from crisis management to global leadership. But it must be bold. Here are some ideas for how in my piece for @opendemocracy.net opendemocracy.net/andy-burnh…

As the UK prepares for its G20 Presidency in 2027, here is a timely & concrete proposal from @liambyrnemp: coordinate efforts to implement a minimum wealth tax on super rich. This would help tackle inequality, raise precious resources & show leadership. neweconomics.org/2026/07/the…

"Rent controls, an idea whose time has come" @ZackPolanski at launch of joint @NEF/ @IIPP_UCL report by @beth_stratford Huge benefits for renters & government; negative impacts on landlords are marginal. Other countries have them, UK has had them before, so why not again?

As @andyburnham takes the stage at the People's History Museum at 11.30 this morning to deliver his keynote speech, here are the three things I will be listening out for!
Andy Burnham is likely to be our next prime minister. Our chief executive @dhnnjyn speaking on @BBCAnyQuestions set out three things he should prioritise: taking action on the cost of living, bringing key utilities back into public control, and ambitious devolution.

Great piece by @IngridRobeyns on the dangers of extreme wealth. Yes, we need to tax billionaires better but we also need to have a societal conversation about how much is too much. Find out more at extremewealthline.com theguardian.com/commentisfre…
