So many people seem genuinely astonished by this local ceasefire in Oleshky, where Russian occupation and the fighting have driven the city into a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe. Turns out, all it takes is an order from the Kremlin, and Russians and Ukrainians stop shooting at each other. They can calmly and civilly arrange the evacuation of innocent civilians facing starvation, even allow Ukrainian and American journalists to be present on the ground, and so on. Well, duh. There is not, and never has been, a single adequate, rational, even remotely sane reason to wage a war aimed at destroying Ukraine. This is the stupidest, most brainless, absurd, pointless, contrived, and deceitful war in human history. The Kremlin wanted to give Donald Trump a little gift ahead of the elections, so the Kremlin gave an order to put the bloodbath on hold for a few dozen hours. All it would take is a single order from the Kremlin, and not only would a local ceasefire become possible, but the entire war would end. Just like that. Instantly. And 95% of Russians wouldn't give a single damn. They would happily accept absolutely anything as yet another "great victory of Russian arms," provided that's how state television explained it to them. And with a snap of the fingers, all those insane fairy tales about "NATO expansion," "Nazi Satanists," the "multipolar world," "historical Russian lands," and all the rest of that bullshit would simply vanish into thin air. The problem is that, in this insane, upside-down looking-glass world, absolutely everything is being done to encourage a megalomaniacal maniac, driven mad by impunity and boredom, to never, ever, under any circumstances stop the war, but to keep it going indefinitely. Instead, he is constantly appeased and rewarded for it.

As for the other people, there are reports that Hubbard was tortured, not fed well, and denied adequate medical care.
"I think I can say that you were treated reasonably well by some of the people," Trump tells Stephen Hubbard, who was detained for over four years in Russia until he was freed Oct. 21.

Regarding refinery strikes. There has been an established pattern. Whenever Ukraine showed restraint, or halted strikes on refineries, Russia simply continued its strike campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, and continued to strike civilian targets in cities.

Solid analysis of the (questionable) legal status of Russian diesel or any Russian oil imports to the US. Interesting that the administration has not yet made a case for the legality of such imports. @ACEurasia @ACGeoEcon
Let's unpack the legal debate over Trump's diesel deal with Russia. I see the imports as illegal, but there are arguments on the other side: 1. The first legal issue is the Ending Importation of Russian Oil Act (EIROA), which Congress passed in April 2022. EIROA states that Russian energy "shall be banned from importation into the [US], in a manner consistent with any implementation actions issued under [EO] 14066..." EIROA then established a process for POTUS to terminate the prohibition following a Russia-Ukraine peace deal, with termination subject to congressional review. 2. The backstory is that in March 2022, Biden signed EO 14066, which invoked IEEPA, the 1977 emergency powers statute, to ban Russian energy imports. However, Treasury issued a general license (GL 16) authorizing a "wind down" of imports for 45 more days. Congress passed EIROA during that 45-day window and likely wanted to ensure that the statutory ban did not cut short the wind-down. Congress may also have wanted to retain any specific licenses that had been issued to enable an orderly wind-down of U.S. imports. 3. Treasury has implemented the diesel deal with GL 135, which purports to authorize the imports under EO 14066 and other Russia sanctions. The Administration likely sees GL 135 as an “implementation action” under EO 14066 thus that EIROA's prohibition does not apply--the imports are “consistent with any implementation actions issued under [EO] 14066.” 4. The problem with this reading is that it would gut the entire termination provision in the law. Courts are supposed to interpret statutes as a whole so that all parts of a statute make sense, and an interpretation that let Trump ignore the termination provisions simply by issuing licenses would render the termination meaningless. The better reading of “consistent with any implementation actions” is that it grandfathered the implementation actions *in place in April 2022,* not that it created an open-ended option for future licenses. That said, I can see what the Administration would argue in court. 5. GL 135 may itself also be invalid. CAATSA, a 2018 statute, requires that licenses that "significantly alter [US] foreign policy" towards Russia must be subject to Congressional review before being implemented. Diesel imports certainly seem to meet this threshold. IEEPA violations have a 10 year statute of limitations. 6. If EIROA applies to the diesel deal, importers (and their facilitators) could face criminal liability under 18 U.S.C. 545, an anti-smuggling statute that makes it illegal to “knowingly import[]” “any merchandise contrary to law,” punishable by fines and up to 20 years in prison. Section 545’s statute of limitations extends beyond Trump’s term. There are also potential civil penalties under 19 U.S.C. 1595a. 7. I see the illegality risk as very real, beyond the obvious reputational and congressional investigation risks. This is why I am skeptical that major companies will touch Russian diesel.

This is simply wrong. The USSR was a federal state made up of 15, in theory, sovereign Soviet Socialist Republics. The Ukrainian SSR had the right to secede under the 1977 Soviet Constitution (in place in 1991). Ukraine is a unitary state; its regions have no right to secede.
Donbas has a right to secede from Ukraine if Ukraine had a right to secede from the USSR. You cannot uphold the right of self-determination in one case but not in the other.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Ukraine seceded as a Soviet republic with explicit secession rights under the 1977 USSR Constitution; Donbas was an oblast in unitary Ukraine, whose constitution makes its territory indivisible. 2014 Donbas referendums lacked legal basis and were illegitimate. departments.bucknell.edu/russian/const/… constituteproject.org/constitution/U… businessinsider.com/russia-staged-…

This graphic neatly illustrates the bipartisan dynamic of massive, unrestrained deficit spending. The decline in the '90s was the result of divided govt when Clinton and GOP shared concerns over spending. Since then, tho, all want more spending regardless of revenue. And remember: reducing the national debt isn't an accounting fetish. Progressive and market-friendly economists agree that when debt reaches 90 percent-plus of GDP, growth tends to slow to a halt, which degrades living standards and future opportunities for all. @reason video is from 2017, when debt was half what it is now in dollars. wsj.com/economy/federal-debt…

So basically what everyone feared would happen is happening.
Russian forces have begun taking civilians from occupied Oleshky to Russia, apparently disregarding previously announced agreements governing the operation. The operations are being conducted by the Russian military, without American representatives or teams from either side’s ombudsman office present. Russia’s state news agency TASS is openly filming the operation. There is no indication that civilians are being given a choice of where they wish to go. No buses or other vehicles designated to transport evacuees to Ukrainian-controlled territory are visible. The operation raises serious concerns that Russia is once again exploiting a humanitarian evacuation to forcibly transfer Ukrainian civilians. The parallels with the evacuation of Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant are disturbing. Once again, Moscow appears to be disregarding agreed procedures while controlling the fate of Ukrainian civilians.
