This one hurts. I lost my dad years ago, watching TNG with him as a kid was such a fond memory. I looked up to both Captain Picard, and my Dad. 😭

People are waiting for the @ProtonPrivacy team to reply about the CTOs "Perception is more important than truth..." statement and more. Open sourcing your tools is a good start, but please don't ignore that the public wants clarification on @andyyen statements.
Hey everyone, we have heard your concerns about Proton’s AI strategy and culture and after internal discussions, we want to share a few things with you. First, Proton does not install tracking software on employees' laptops to measure how much AI-generated code they produce. This rumor stemmed from a misunderstanding about how MDM software works, and it's not true. Second, our use of AI will never be at the expense of security. In the past year, contrary to what has been alleged, additional layers of security review have been added to meet the threat posed by hostile AIs scanning Proton's open-source code for vulnerabilities. Our code is open source, and its security remains open for all to verify. We want to prove this to you, so in the interest of transparency, we will lift the hood on how we use AI internally at Proton. This includes publicly releasing and open sourcing several of the internal tools that we use, including more advanced versions of Lumo with greater capabilities, which have never been made available outside of the company. We will also publish how code reviews and security reviews at Proton are done, and detail our AI policies, including where AI is permitted, and where it is not, and our rationale. Instead of just being able to see the final open-source code that we produce to verify security, you will also be able to assess how that code was produced. Lastly, we are not re-interviewing our staff about AI usage, and there are no job losses due to AI re-interviews. You can hold us to these commitments. We're aware that we haven't lived up to the high standard you ought to hold us to, and for that we can only apologize, we are sorry.

Privacy tip #1337 - A pop-up screams 'Your computer is infected! Call Microsoft now!' with a siren sound. Microsoft does not put phone numbers in pop-ups. Close the browser, with Task Manager if you have to, and never let a stranger remote into your PC.

Check whether your info showed up in a data breach at haveibeenpwned.com. If it did, don't panic! Just start using a password manager so one leaky site can't unlock the rest of your life. 🔐

Found a 2TB flash drive for $12. It is a 16GB drive lying about its size, so your files look saved right up until they quietly aren't. Before trusting a bargain drive, run a free capacity test like H2testw or f3.

Every 'smart' device is just a dumb device that learned to talk about you behind your back.

Y2K happened because old software stored years as two digits to save memory. Thousands of people spent years fixing it, nothing exploded, and everyone decided it was overhyped. That's IT work in one sentence: do it right and people think nothing happened.

#Privacy tip #1337 - Posting a photo can share where you took it. Many phones save GPS coordinates in the file's metadata. Big platforms usually strip it, but direct sends and email often keep it. Turn off location tagging in your camera settings.

Do we really want this guy in charge of our PII? (Incredible reporting as usual by @404mediaco )
We got leaked audio of Flock's CEO talking at a private police conference, including the "never apologize" line. Watch more of it here, and subscribe: youtube.com/watch?v=zDwXsMOP…

Remember this? Iomega Zip drives were famous for the 'click of death': a failing drive that just clicked instead of reading your disk. So you'd try another disk. More clicking. 🫣

Most servers run #linux and many are kept alive by volunteers. Somewhere, one maintainer is holding up a project you use every day. Buy them a coffee. ☕ (or a power root energy drink)⚡

Seeing ads for 'AI-powered quantum sleep monitors' that cost $200. It is a 2014 pedometer taped to a watch strap. At least scammers used to put effort into the plastic casing?
