America’s biggest power grid already flinched, and almost nobody noticed.
On July 22, 2026, at 7:56 a.m. Eastern, a routine fault hit a 230-kilovolt line in northern Virginia. Grid operators cleared it normally. The data centers did not. About 3,800 megawatts of computing load, roughly three large nuclear reactors, dropped off in seconds and jumped to backup diesel. PJM, which serves 65 million people from Illinois to Washington, D.C., watched demand fall 3.8 percent in one cycle. Its own operating chair said the servers should not have disconnected. The same corner of Virginia had already thrown off about 1,500 megawatts in 2024 and again in 2025. July was the largest event PJM has recorded. No blackout, just a warning.
The forecast is worse. A Pennsylvania PUC study using PJM’s own numbers says that by 2030 the odds of a power shortage are nearly six times the planning standard. In a high load case, more than 13 shortage days a year, over a hundred times the standard. The only scenario that still meets the target is no new data centers.
The hosts have started acting like they believe it. Loudoun County, the heart of Data Center Alley, moved on September 15 to freeze new data center and substation approvals for up to a year. It already has roughly 4,700 diesel backup generators behind those buildings. Texas Governor Abbott has frozen new grid connections and, as of September 21, environmental permits for data centers until electricity and water audits are done. Nearly 50 gigawatts of proposed U.S. data center capacity sits in Texas and could be stuck.
PJM tried to cover a 6.8 gigawatt shortfall with a special auction. Federal regulators called it deeply flawed. PJM suspended it. New transmission lines take most of a decade. Large transformers are on leads stretching toward five years. Utilities asked for $18.6 billion in rate hikes in the first half of 2026.

NEW: ICE is making additional changes to the way its officers make vehicle stops, according to an internal agency memo obtained by @realDailyWire.
The new instructions come after ICE officers were given short-lived verbal orders over the weekend to stop making arrests of illegal immigrants who don’t have criminal convictions or charges. It follows several recent ICE-involved shootings in which officers were attempting to make arrests during vehicle stops.
