Shortly after their arrival, JJ’s wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent brain surgery. She has been hospitalized and is now incapacitated, requiring 24-hour care. She is expected to return home September 30. While his wife has been in the hospital, JJ has been caring for his family and supporting his 15-year-old son and 19-year-old daughter while navigating the challenges of starting over in a new country. JJ wants to work. We want to help remove the practical employment barriers standing between him and that opportunity. 🚨 WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT REFUGEE HOUSING CONTRACTS. @nickshirleyy @nicksortor @DeputySecState @SecRubio @PieterVand37940 I am beginning to ask some very serious questions about what happens to housing costs when refugees arrive in the United States. If an apartment is publicly advertised for $900 a month, why would that same apartment suddenly be contracted at $1,100 a month when a refugee and a resettlement agency are involved? Where is the additional $200 per month going? If utilities, furnishings, deposits, transportation, administrative services, or some other legitimate expense accounts for the difference, then show it. There may be a perfectly legitimate explanation. But refugees deserve to know what is being paid on their behalf, and American taxpayers deserve to know how federal resettlement dollars are being spent. These are not unlimited funds. Money spent unnecessarily on inflated housing costs is money that cannot be used to help a newly arrived family become stable and self-sufficient. I want to know: Who negotiates these leases? Who signs the contracts? Who pays the landlord? What was the property advertised for before the agency became involved? What additional services justify a higher contracted rent? And who, if anyone, financially benefits from that difference? I am not alleging fraud without evidence. I am saying that when a $900 apartment becomes an $1,100 apartment because a refugee resettlement contract enters the picture, somebody should be able to explain exactly why. Transparency protects the refugees AND the taxpayers. If you are a refugee and you have documentation showing that the rent being paid for your housing was higher than the publicly advertised rent for the same property, please save the advertisement, lease, invoices, and payment information. We need facts. We need receipts. And we need answers.
