My girlfriend asked me to help her prepare for a job interview at a company where I had several contacts.
I helped her improve her CV, practise interview questions, and prepare a presentation.
She got the job and celebrated with me that evening.
A month later, she began acting strangely.
She stopped telling me about work and became defensive whenever I asked about her colleagues.
I didn’t want to be controlling, so I gave her space.
Then one evening, she accidentally left her laptop open while we were watching a film.
A notification appeared from her manager.
It read:
“We need to discuss what happened after the conference. Your boyfriend must not find out.”
I stared at the screen.
When she returned, I asked her about the message.
She immediately closed the laptop and said it was a misunderstanding.

CEO: “So you're telling me we cannot achieve the target?”
Manager: “I'm telling you what needs to change if we want to achieve it.”
The CEO leaned back in his chair.
CEO: “I don't pay you to give me reasons why things cannot work.”
Manager: “And I don't think you hired me just to tell you what you want to hear.”
The room went silent.
This happened during a management meeting in a company in Lagos.
The manager had spent the previous three weeks reviewing sales reports, speaking with the sales representatives and identifying why revenue had dropped.
His findings were clear. Two major clients had stopped doing business with the company, the marketing budget had been reduced, and the sales team was working with targets that had not been reviewed in almost a year.
He presented all of this to the CEO and recommended adjusting the strategy.
The CEO wasn't interested.
He insisted that the team should work harder and find a way to deliver the expected numbers.
After the meeting, the manager was approached by one of his colleagues.
Colleague: “Why did you have to challenge him like that? You know he doesn't like being told no.”
Manager: “I wasn't telling him no. I was explaining what the business needs.”
Three days later, the CEO called him into his office.
CEO: “I want you to understand that decisions about this company are mine.”
Manager: “Absolutely, sir. But the responsibility for delivering those decisions falls on my team.”
CEO: “Are you refusing to work with the target?”
Manager: “No, sir. I'm asking for the resources and strategy required to achieve it.”
The CEO ended the conversation without giving him an answer.
A month later, the sales figures were released. The company had missed its target again.
Interestingly, the same manager was invited to explain why the department had failed.
That was when he realized something.
He was expected to take responsibility for decisions he had no authority to influence.
Some companies give managers the responsibility of delivering results but deny them the authority to make the decisions necessary to achieve those results.
And when things go wrong, management suddenly remembers who is responsible.

My wife started going to our neighbor's house every night. She said "NEPA took light, I want to go and watch film in his house."
I trusted her. Our neighbor is a single guy. "Just neighbor" she said.
One night she came back at 11:45pm. Smiling. Glowing. Something I haven't seen in our marriage for 2 years.
I asked "Film sweet?"
She said "Yes, very sweet."
Next day I confronted the neighbor casually: "What film you guys watched?"
He stammered: "Ah... Netflix... action film..."
That night I followed her. She didn't knock. She had a key. She entered and locked the door behind her.
10 minutes later I heard her laugh. That laugh she stopped giving me since last year when she started saying "You don't satisfy me."
I knocked. He opened with just a towel. She was hiding in the bathroom.
She came out fully dressed but her eyes were red.
She said: "Yes. I went to him. Because you don't touch me the way I want. You do 2 minutes and sleep. He listens to me. He makes me feel like a woman."
I said "So you are sleeping with my neighbor because of sex?"
She said: "I didn't plan it. I went to watch film. One thing led to another. At least he satisfies me. You never asked what I want."
My wife told me I don't satisfy her in bed.
5 years of marriage. 2 kids. Yesterday she said: "You last 2 minutes and you roll over and sleep. I'm tired of faking it."
I have been providing, paying rent, school fees, being faithful. But she said "You don't satisfy me."
I asked her "Have you been satisfied elsewhere?"
She said: "No. But I watch videos. I talk to my friends. They enjoy their husbands. I just lie there and wait for you to finish."

The manager apologised but explained that company rules applied to everyone.
