US federal, state & local governments spend roughly 45% of GDP. Add in the cost of complying with regulations, etc (~7% of GDP)…and ~52% of everything the US produces is taxed or borrowed by government. These are European levels and the US is now experiencing European growth rates. Slow growth means stagnant or declining living standards. In Europe, cars have been getting smaller and smaller, more and more people are living together in the same square footage. It happens slowly, but the root cause of these lower living standards is big government. The more we redistribute, from producers to non-producers, from efficient fossil fuel tech to inefficient clean energy tech, the less private sector growth there is. So, when you see a story in the NYT’s about 400 sq ft homes, please realize that people don’t really want to live in such small spaces, they are forced to because the government is taking money that they earned and spending it on someone or something else. What’s most interesting is that people have been brainwashed into thinking by driving small cars and living a minimalist life style they are saving the world and they pat themselves on the back. In reality, government is taking from them and convincing them it’s good.
