I wonder how many pensioners who like the triple lock campaigned for higher taxes and pensions while they were working.

If you want a smaller state and serious tax cuts, then you should not increase the personal allowance. It's expensive and inefficient, and doesn't fix the most serious problems we have (high marginal rates, SDLT, complexity, etc)
Reform’s policy to further extend allowances makes this problem bigger which is why it is a daft choice for a tax cut. As a small state low tax kind of person you might think it strange that I’m criticising a tax cut. But there are much better ways of using tax cuts to stimulate growth and be revenue neutral. We have a deficit and much as in a tax cutter by heart - I’m even more a fiscal hawk. We need to get to a balanced budget and zero deficit. Cutting spending by £50bn would be a good start but giving it away in this form is not the best policy. We should be ending tax traps, at marginal rates which are a huge disincentive for people to aspire to earn more and would probably self fund with behaviour change. We should be scrapping stamp duty to get the housing market moving and increasing investment into UK equities. We should welcome back non doms and scrap Labours pension and IHT raids. These measures would create growth. I also think they would not detract from tax revenues and surprise the Treasury on the up side.

New blog post! The government should lower the Personal Allowance in order to reduce the burden on higher earners and cut more economically damaging taxes such as Stamp Duty, NICs, and Corporation Tax. Link to follow

There really is something sulphurous about Matt Goodwin. Incendiary views. Suspect opinion polls. Massive self-obsession. British public life would be so much better without him.

I call bullshit. You’ve spent the last 48 hours calling me a ‘traitor’ for not drawing attention to a leaked spreadsheet with our special forces and MI6 officers’ names on. But we’re meant to believe this tweet attacking me as a traitor for having a Jewish wife & family was liked ‘accidentally’ by ‘one of the team.’ You must think we’re all thick. No. The mask has slipped. Likes are private. You thought nobody would ever know. Unfortunately for you, the racist account who posted the tweet and could see the likes exposed you. Reform should give you the boot.
One of the team who post to my X account accidentally pressed like on an awful antisemitic tweet earlier today. I apologise for this. The post also refers to “brown savages”, and is equally racist against me. Clearly it was not intentional. The amount of antisemitism and racism on this platform is spiralling out of control, and I hope that changes soon.

Genuinely the most enraging thing about housing discourse is how people talk about 'affordability' like it's some sort of innate quality, like the building needs to be made out of affordium. Housing. is. affordable. when. housing. is. abundant. Supply and demand are real.
"No matter how many houses you build, if they are not affordable, then you will not solve the housing crisis." @ZackPolanski at our @TWT_NOW panel on why we need to take on the profiteers and the corporate giants to win homes for people.

For months, folks on this website have pushed a set of "gotcha" tropes to debunk the existence of famine in Gaza. In fact they are mostly debunking their own credibility on famine dynamics. As we await tomorrow's IPC report, here is a pre-buttal 🧵of some of those tropes.

EXTREMELY disappointing that the Government is giving in on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. These amendments will ❌ Slow down development ❌ Make infrastructure more expensive ❌ Do nothing to solve the housing crisis!
We welcome new Government amendments to the Planning Bill that: ✅ Deliver more rigorous scientific safeguards ✅ Guarantee nature benefits will outweigh any harm caused ✅ Requires back-up measures if compensation delivery falls short Now we hold Gov’s feet to the fire over implementation... I am afraid Volodymyr Zelenskyy is completely right. We risk drifting back to the ghastly Franco German Normandy format which treated Russia and Ukraine as equally valid interlocutors in a domestic squabble. That is a shameful betrayal of the reality - that Putin has launched a criminal and unjustifiable invasion while Ukraine is an entirely innocent party. The only way to bring this war to an end is massively and rapidly to strengthen the position of Ukraine.
Chancellor Scholz told me that he planned to call Putin. His call, in my opinion, opens Pandora's Box. There may now be other conversations and phone calls. Just a lot of words. And this is exactly what Putin has long sought. It is critical for him to weaken his isolation, as well as Russia's isolation, and to hold mere talks that will lead nowhere. He has been doing this for decades. This has allowed Russia to avoid making any changes to its policies, effectively doing nothing, which has ultimately led to this war. We understand all the current challenges and we know what to do. And we want to make it clear: there will be no “Minsk-3”; we need real peace.

The lesson here is not that social media contains misinformation. The lesson is: Don't urge people to burn other people to death. I don't know who needs to learn that lesson. Personally I don't consider it a very onerous requirement.

Strongly disagree. This is FPTP at its *best*, allowing the electorate to mete out proper punishment and let another team have a proper go of it without having to bend to fringe parties that hardly anybody at all wants.
I just can’t get past Labour winning 65% of seats off 34% of the vote. Absolutely wild mismatch between the headline result and, well, everything else. Britain is now a multi-party system, and first-past-the-post can’t cope.

Is it? Isn’t it actually a failure of basic manners? An example of how conditioned people have become by confrontational reality TV formats to think this is okay. Sunak and Starmer have their weaknesses like any of us but they’re both hardworking people in public service.
