This is how "Kartiker Lorai" looks like in Beldanga,Murshidabad.
It's a century old tradition which happens during Kartick Puja where tradition centers on massive, towering idols carried directly on the shoulders of ecstatic devotees.
The term "Lorai" translates to "battle" or "fight." Over 100 to 300 grand & small neighborhood puja committees compete in a friendly, high-energy display of carrying, dancing, and parading their heavy idols through the streets from one end of Beldanga to the other.
Now that we have a Sanatani government, we also need to showcase our traditions to the nation.

#WATCH | We developed a sodium-ion battery because India is expected to deploy 3,000 GWh of battery storage but remains dependent on imports. Achieving self-reliance requires domestic cell manufacturing and a secure supply chain. Since materials account for 60% of cell manufacturing costs, we use agricultural waste from farmers to produce hard carbon, which we now export internationally: Yogesh Sharma, Professor, IIT.

🇯🇲 THE INDIAN CONTRIBUTION TO JAMAICA THAT MANY JAMAICANS DON’T KNOW ABOUT 🇮🇳
When we talk about Jamaican culture, we often talk about African heritage, but there is another important part of Jamaica’s history that deserves far more recognition: the contribution of the Indian people who arrived in Jamaica as indentured labourers from 1845 onwards.
Following the abolition of slavery, plantation owners still wanted cheap labour. More than 36,000 Indians were brought to Jamaica between 1845 and 1917.
Their arrival came with enormous hardship. They endured long sea journeys, harsh working conditions, poor accommodation, low wages and restrictive contracts. Indentureship was legally different from slavery, but the exploitation and suffering experienced by many of these workers must never be overlooked.
But look at what these people contributed to Jamaica!
1. FOOD AND SPICES 🌶️
They brought a whole new dimension to Jamaican cooking:
Curry spices, turmeric and traditional Indian seasonings.
Roti and wheat flour traditions.
Ginger and eggplant.
Traditional curry preparations.
New ways of preparing vegetables and cooking with spices.
Think about curry goat, roti and curried vegetables. These Indian culinary traditions became part of the Jamaican food we know and enjoy today.
2. AGRICULTURE AND PLANTS 🌱
They brought agricultural knowledge and introduced or helped establish plants and crops, including Indian mango varieties, tamarind, jackfruit and other useful plants.
They also helped establish rice cultivation in Jamaica.
3. GANJA AND SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS 🌿
Here is something many people may not know.
Indian indentured workers brought the word ganja from India, along with established traditions of spiritual cannabis use.
Among the Indian migrants were Hindu holy men known as sadhus. Some wore their hair in locks and used cannabis in religious devotion.
There are historical connections between these traditions and later Jamaican spiritual culture, including elements associated with Rastafari. This is an influence worth understanding, while recognising that Rastafari developed as a distinct African-centred Jamaican movement.
4. RELIGION AND CULTURE 🕉️
They brought Hindu and Muslim religious traditions, festivals, music, dance, clothing, customs and languages.
Indian cultural celebrations, including Hosay, became part of Jamaica’s cultural heritage.
5. BUSINESS AND SKILLED TRADES
Their descendants also contributed as shopkeepers, fishermen, barbers, merchants, jewellers and skilled craftspeople.
And here is what I find particularly interesting:
Many of the things we now associate with Jamaican life have contributions from people whose history is not always given enough recognition.
The food on our tables, the spices in our kitchens, the mangoes we enjoy, the word ganja and elements of our cultural traditions all tell part of this story.
The Indians did not simply come to Jamaica to work on plantations. They came with a history, knowledge, skills, beliefs, food and traditions of their own.
They helped shape the Jamaica we know today.
Their contribution deserves to be remembered, respected and taught alongside the contributions of our African ancestors and all the other communities that helped build Jamaica.
🇯🇲 Jamaican history is richer than many people realise. And it is time we told the whole story.
