I have made a 20 minute video of my talk at the Autism Show yesterday on the topic of recovering from burnout. It is aimed at autistic young people, but parents and professionals said it was helpful for them too. You can watch it here: youtu.be/l_LA35VXv9g?si=FiNO…

Tests aren't the ultimate measure of success & they don't define our worth. Our minds are unique & our strengths go far beyond what can be measured on a test paper. There are alternative paths to success that work for our strengths & interests. #Autism

It’s important to remember that the current diagnostic criteria for autism describe distressed autistic people, yet it’s perfectly possible to be autistic & thrive.

@naomicfisher and I made a series of short videos for parents of autistic children on looking after themselves. They're particularly suitable for those whose children are recently diagnosed or who haven't yet got a diagnosis. Really hope you like them. bit.ly/3TTUEHz

All of these. I embrace being autistic & I don't care what people IRL think of me. Go ahead and judge me. I am not you. I will still be a kind person. Being weird is the new normal. #Autistic #ActuallyAutistic

If anyone was confused by Leo in #TheAssembly being intelligent & articulate, yet unable to speak, this is a very common experience for autistic people for lots of reasons. This blog explains it beautifully @AssistiveWare #autism
What is intermittent, unreliable, insufficient, and expensive speech? This article explores some of the varied experiences autistic people can have navigating the space between non-speaking and fully speaking. Read more here: buff.ly/4cEsMzL

Allowing time and space for someone to speak when they are struggling is vitally important but can be very hard to do. @michaelsheen gives a masterclass here. And what an interesting question! #TheAssembly #Autism

April is #AutismAwarenessMonth. Can we trade all that awareness for more curiosity, listening, generosity, love, compassion action and connection?

When you support a learner with #PDA you should also make sure you look after yourself. Any anxiety or frustration you feel is likely to be picked up by a learner with PDA. Do not be afraid to ask for help when needed. Illustration: @_MissingTheMark

It’s Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week! 💚 The prevalence of aromanticism is higher in the autism community. But have you heard of autiaro/autiaromantic? It’s an aromantic identity that is so significantly influenced by autistic traits that the two are considered inseparable.

Quotes like this annoy me because they get the cause and effect backwards. Barriers in how we structure things, prevent monotropic people getting into the flow states we need to get stuff done. That leads to a constant state of trauma responses and desperate attempts to survive.
The most prominent feature of ADHD is executive dysfunction. One challenge is initiating tasks. It’s just legit HARDER to motivate to start. Often this intersects with feeling overwhelmed and not knowing where to start. The result? We just do nothing because we feel “paralyzed” and end up ruminating about all we “should be doing.” This is often super uncomfortable and a shame spiral is often not far behind. Can you relate? -Dr. Jen
