There’s nothing “gutsy” about endorsing someone you told everyone you were working to defeat up to just a day ago.
Nothing about either candidate has changed. El-Sayed is not worse—and Rogers is not better—than a week ago, a month ago, or a year ago.
It’s either a long con, an intemperate decision, or a disconnect from reality.

I am begging the neocons and pro-Israel conservatives applauding Stevens today to understand that she's hurt the cause of Israel and fighting antisemitism on the left. Plus, saying that anyone critical of Stevens is fine with antisemitism just makes people tune out.

this expresses the problems with El-Sayed's antagonists perfectly. They know they are effectively accusing him of being a terrorist, know it is false, but greatly desire to win the election on this specific ground to send a message to the party about Muslim candidates.
Autumn Florek retweeted
If I thought this was principle over party, I’d get it. But it’s not, it’s about pettiness and her feelings being hurt. That’s the only reason you endorse Abdul repeatedly, tell people last night you’re not endorsing Rogers, and then reverse course.

Imagine working so hard for Stevens and then she chucks you all under a massive bus…

I completely understand being a Democrat and wanting to push back against the AES brand of progressivism rising within the part, but the way Stevens has gone about this really couldn't have been worse

Stevens says she’s for investing in Black owned businesses. “And that’s the policy that Mike’s going to take on,” Stevens says.

Oh yeah. If he underperforms his final polls, which may simply be polling error, it's very, very easy for people to go "Haley Stevens did it."

It’s frankly delusional to argue Haley Stevens is making a principled stand against Abdul El-Sayed.
She was on TV just days ago urging everyone to vote for him. She’s done that for months. Stevens is mad his campaign spurned her—that’s it. There’s no honor in that.
I spoke with Haley Stevens yesterday.
Feeling a bit absurd in pointing out the obvious and being far kinder than I should have been, I reminded her that the outcome of this senate race will be viewed in the light of a future Supreme Court vacancy, and I expressed a hope that all of us understand the stakes.
She assured me she's supporting Dr. El-Sayed, sent me a video of a recent speech she gave blasting Mike Rogers and said this: "Still stands. I promise."
She also said she's been sending this video to other folks to make it clear where she stands on this race.
Again: that was yesterday.
I have known Haley Stevens for years. I have counted her as a friend and an ally. We've had many thoughtful conversations about this country, and she has never failed to remind me that her mother is a fan of my writing.
Whatever other political differences we have, she has always made it clear to me she would stand with LGBTQ people. It was a red line she refused to cross.
Instead, she has made the inexplicable decision to endorse a man who views LGBTQ Americans as second-class citizens unworthy of full equality.
I can't help but wonder what her mother must be thinking right now.
I have no idea what has happened to the person I thought I knew, but clearly, she has completely taken leave of her senses in endorsing a Republican who is little more than a Trump sycophant -- less than 24 hours after promising me that she has not wavered from the bigger picture.
I am disgusted with her cynicism and cowardice in this moment. God forgive me for trusting her.
If you're a Michigan voter and as disgusted as I am, get to your polling place and vote for Dr. El-Sayed.

Abdul El-Sayed on primary night in August, speaking directly to Jewish Michiganders:
“My commitment to Jewish safety is the same commitment that I have to the safety of my own daughters.”
Three weeks later, after Hasan Piker’s remarks, he called antisemitism “a scourge” that must be addressed “in all its forms.”
Autumn Florek retweeted
As a Michigander, I am FURIOUS with @HaleyforMI. We have worked SO HARD to build a Senate that will curb Trump's authoritarian power grabs.
This is my response to her. Let's fight for our democracy! Let's win the Senate! @AbdulElSayed for Senate.

Wow… what an absolute charlatan. Three days ago, Stevens said she was voting for El-Sayed. I hate politicians who switch sides at the last minute before elections. And everyone else always ends up hating them too. Just the ultimate political treachery.
Autumn Florek retweeted
I actually agree with this. I don't see any of the normie Abdul dislikers on my TL saying she did the right thing. They are all saying that this is insane and that they hope he wins now.

Today, Haley Stevens endorsed Donald Trump’s most savage policies—the brutalizing of Hispanics, the killing of US citizens in American streets, the launching of endless wars, the gutting of Michigander’s health care, his war on civil rights, higher gas prices, more expensive groceries, less health care, and endless corruption. A vote for Mike Rogers is a vote for Donald Trump. End of story.

Which is it?!?
Mike Rogers will be another rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda. We can’t afford to give MAGA another Senate seat in November. #MISEN

I’m as pro-Israel as you can be, a huge el-sayed critic, and I would rather shoot self before I’d endorse Rogers.
