Since everyone is sharing their Weil stories, I will share mine. 20 something years ago when I interviewed there, they didn’t give me an offer. Ha ha ha. Look at them now.
The California wealth tax is such a spectacularly bad idea that even though I really want to believe in the good faith of the proponents, I wonder sometimes.
More than 100 economists released a letter against California's proposed wealth tax on the ballot next week. UT Austin Economics Professor @Jon_Hartley_ led the effort. cnb.cx/4zXNK7r
It is law faculty hiring season, and before you make an offer you'd better run the candidate's recent papers through Pangram. I AM NOT saying that a positive result should disqualify anyone, or even count against them. I think AI makes our work better and we should use it. I AM saying that the degree of everyone's AI copying/pasting over the last couple of years will soon be catalogued by critics of higher education and out in the open--just understand that and decide how comfortable you are with it.
It is telling that academics all over the internet are saying that the inspiration for their politics and worldview came from Captain Picard on Star Trek, when what many of them actually want is something closer to the Borg.
Here is something that not many outsiders ever get to see. The faculty nap room at our law school. It’s perfect when you want to arrive fresh to class after a morning of toil.

A lot of people around here complain about the lawlessness of the school bus, but I'm grateful for it because that's really where my then-7yo learned MMA.
Earlier in my career I turned down media because I wasn't an expert in the subject. Later I learned that law professors can basically just say things like, "This case will boil down to the law and the facts, and applying the law to the facts," and that's good enough for media.
Unfathomable wealth straight out of law school.

One Halloween my kid said I didn't even need a costume because I could just be "an old boring guy" for Halloween.
A thing I'm very slowly writing about:
We often describe the bundle of legal rights that come with ownership of a share of stock as voting, selling, or suing. Selling just allows you to liquidate the other rights, so it's not an independent right of its own.
Thus, we're down to voting and suing. Suing just compensates you for something that was wrongfully taken away from you; it doesn't actually serve as a source of value from holding the share.
So we're down to voting. That's what you buy when you buy a share. A share of stock is a vote.
I will not be taking questions about my overly reductive theory at this time.

It's an amazing coincidence that generative AI appeared right at the exact time I ramped up my productivity to 27 law review articles per year.
