In lieu of our usual Control Point (CP) Sundays edition this morning, we have an updated Transformative Rail Vision Map ready (google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid…), including MTL-TOR HFR, Ethan Allen to BUR, Vermonter to MTL & a couple glaring gaps: Big Sky Explorer to Sandpoint & KNX-CHT.

"The council on Tuesday approved an agreement for a Corridor Identification & Development Program... Until this point, everything for the project has been paid for by a federal grant. The next step requires a 10% local match. Peoria’s portion is $42,455." 25newsnow.com/2026/10/28/nex…

While we have so much further to go in improving intercity passenger rail in the U.S., we're notably improved from the low point in from the late 50s-early 80s, as seen here in how far the former NY Central Niagara Branch deteriorated under Penn Central... buffalonews.com/multimedia/a…

Here’s the CSX Niagara Branch just north of the Intl. Railway Bridge in Buffalo’s Black Rock district. Amtrak Empire Service trains currently run Niagara Falls-Buffalo Exchange St in about 36 minutes, nearly comparable with driving. The corridor just needs full double tracking.

While the Niagara Branch seemingly takes a less direct path between the Niagara Falls station location and downtown Buffalo compared to the I-190 via Grand Island, it benefits from near total grade separation and avoids local traffic at either end. It's a wash vs driving.

Balladeer: Now, you'd think after all this time, Pennsylvania governments would figure out that tryin' to trap them Reading & Northern boys is like tryin' to nail Jell-O to a tree. But some folks just gotta learn the hard way. Let's see how this one shakes out, shall we…?🛤️

Sending our sympathy for those on board hurt or worse in today’s collision in Spain. I am not familiar enough to comment on the Spanish HSR & intercity rail network otherwise.
❗ La imágenes que muestran cómo han quedado los trenes tras el choque ferroviario en Toledo. Los vagones del Iryo han descarrilado tras ser alcanzados por un tren de Renfe y han caído por un terraplén shorturl.at/2rlV1

"The MBTA’s project chart places that notice around the end of 2026 and design review in 2027, followed by diesel deliveries around 2029 and 2030 and battery/catenary deliveries around 2030 and 2031." railway.supply/mbta-board-ap…

Overall, some good thoughts here on intercity passenger rail travel from Pittsburgh, but I take issue of parking any kind of high- or higher-speed improvements between Harrisburg & PGH as a dream. We can consider segment upgrades vs all-or-nothing HSR. masstransitmag.com/rail/news…

Introducing segments of new tunnels can make the project less daunting from a capital cost & timeframe perspective, and offer gradual improvements on current service. And, as I've noted before, the benefits of upgrading this corridor could reach people in a dozen or more states.

You know what we haven't heard about in a while? MARC service to Hagerstown (likely via the former B&O corridor from Brunswick Jct).🛤️ Bus service connects Hagerstown to BWI Airport & the MARC Penn Line (1 daily RT, except SAT) & Shady Grove on the Red Line (3 weekday RTs)

I know plenty of others shared this news last week, but wanted to also do so on this handle. All public funding is now in place to move forward with the 13.5-mile service. But Brightline-Florida East Coast legal issues are the next roadblock to overcome. wlrn.org/transportation/2026…

I’m reissuing this cold take for Halloween 2026; nearly all Trunk Or Treat events are outreach events for various community entities (churches, schools, programs) rather than replacing traditional Trick Or Treating on Halloween night due to the built environment. 🎃 (more 👇)

The fact that most of these events are held well before Halloween night should indicate the purpose as described above. There’s discussions to be had about the prevalence of parking at local institutions in regards to equity, density, etc, but Trunk Or Treat is a red herring.

I know this is a trains account but I fly a lot for my job. And I don’t get how so many people could care less what’s happening out the window. Yesterday, I saw a rainbow over the Rincon Mountains leaving Tucson and looked down on my neighborhood landing at BTR. Best part of 🛫🛬

I have a modest proposal that will produce pure joy for a few million people & entertainment for millions more: Combine the Bills offense & Vikings defense for 2 seasons. Twin Cities & Buffalo flip a coin for who gets first season home games. Buffasota Viking Bills. 🏈
The Bills allow 20x more points than the Vikings in the 4th quarter

Both teams have lost 4 Super Bowls, and won zero. Both places get tons of snow, have light-rail systems and love hockey. Delta kills it on the MSP-BUF market for a couple years.

Logical off-strength talent swaps happen, like Justin Jefferson catches balls from Josh Allen. The purple defense finds some snaps for Groot.
