Paramount-Warner Bros. will allocate just $5 million per year to acquire indie films.
The $111 billion deal pledges to make at least 30 films a year and will spend at least $1.5 billion in additional domestic film and TV production over five years.
What does this mean? The company will operate a modestly funded “Independent Film Fund” to buy movies based on original screenplays or originated from film producers operating outside of Paramount, Disney, Universal or Sony.
The wildly optimistic version of this is the company pulls off six micro-budget blockbusters like 'Obsession' (which cost $750,000). But many indie films cost in the tens of millions — particularly if they’re star-driven or effects-heavy. The Zendaya film 'The Drama,' for instance, cost around $28 million. While the budget for the 2024 disaster 'Megalopolis' ballooned to around $120 million.

“Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins says she’s “tuning out” the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger news because “the studio system is in such bad shape”:
“I didn’t even look at it, frankly. I’ve been tuning all of that out,” Jenkins, who has a longstanding relationship with Warner Bros., tells Variety of the news. “It’s such chaos. I think the studio system is in such bad shape that I’m kind of tuning it out.”
Still, Jenkins remains optimistic about the industry’s future. Asked whether she would make a film with Warner Bros. under Ellison’s leadership, she says, “You never know. I never say no to anything because so many people have different projects. Something may come along, and they’ve been making some great films, and who knows.”
