Thank you profusely @hibaaq . You made a profound difference in the lives of Somalilanders at a time when their voices were silenced by unimaginable brutality. You stood up against the genocidal Somalian regime of Siyad Barre and spoke truth when speaking up meant risking everything. Because of your tireless advocacy, representatives like Congressman Sam Gejdenson pressed the GAO for investigations that exposed the regime’s atrocities including the bombing of Hargeisa and Burao, the massacres of civilians, the displacement of half a million people, and the U.S. government’s complicity in arming Barre.
Your courage and persistence were instrumental in cutting off American military and economic aid to a dictatorship that thrived on terror and wholesale slaughter. I have seen your name appear again and again in U.S. State Department and government files, a reminder that you were always there pushing forward when others could not. You did this not for recognition or personal gain but for survival, dignity, and the future freedom of all Somalilanders.
Because of women like you Somalilanders endured, resisted, and carried their struggle into the light of international attention. African Union Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf (former-Djibouti foreign Minister) called Houthi attacks on shipping including vessels tied to American interests “ legitimate” and called the Iran-backed militants as “our brothers.”
Meanwhile America still pays Djibouti ~$63M a year for Camp Lemonnier, a base he blocked from being used to against those same Houthis.
