Ever wondered what a cell has experienced in the past? This is in general hard to measure. Here we introduce the recordanelle, to equip cells with a tool that lets them record their own history.

One engineered protein, anchored to the mitochondria, builds a synthetic organelle that samples up to 90% of a human cell's mRNAs and protects them for days.
Earlier RNA recorders logged a few genes over a narrow window.

We also talk about how this project was started by my fabulous co-first author Marcos Manero-Carranza, during his Master thesis (for which he got an #ETHMedal).

Today in @NatureBiotech we introduce the "recordanelle", a synthetic organelle that enables transcriptome-wide single-cell RNA recording in human cells. Big thanks to team: @ReinkemeierCD, Marcos Manero-Carranza, et al. 🧵👇

It does so without a measurable impact on viability, the cell’s proteome, the global transcriptome or the cell’s metabolism. Thus, this work provides a non-disruptive and unbiased transcriptome-wide single-cell RNA recording technology.
