📺 “We reported events one-sidedly for years”: Serbian TV apologizes to viewers after Vučić's party loses the election
Radio Television of Vojvodina (RTV) opened its news broadcast with footage of celebrations following the Student List's election victory — scenes it had failed to show the previous evening.
“For years, we failed to fulfill our duty. We kept silent, turned a blind eye, reported events one-sidedly, and failed to ask the necessary questions. For that, we owe our viewers an apology,” news anchor Goran Eror said.
Following the controversy, RTV's acting editor-in-chief Nenad Čačić resigned.
A similar incident occurred in Hungary, where state television also apologized to viewers after Viktor Orbán's election defeat.
🎉🎉 Serbia celebrates Vučić's defeat all night — now he's warning the country about sanctions against Russia
After 14 years of Aleksandar Vučić's political dominance, his bloc has lost the snap parliamentary elections. The opposition Student List, which emerged from mass anti-government protests, has claimed victory.
According to preliminary figures from Ipsos and CeSID, the students secured around 53% of the vote, while Vučić's coalition received approximately 39%.
The former president acknowledged defeat. He estimated that the winners could secure 135–140 seats in Serbia's 250-member parliament.
But he couldn't resist issuing a warning about Russia. Vučić claimed the new government could impose sanctions on Moscow as early as March or April.
Meanwhile, Belgrade and other Serbian cities celebrated the student movement's victory throughout the night, with car horns, singing, and crowds cheering in the streets.
Final election results are still pending.

On today's Coffee House Shots podcast: Budget week is finally here but it's also the week of Hallowe'en so Patrick Gibbons asks James Heale and Michael Simmons: will Burnham's first budget be one of tricks or treats?
There have been a drip-feed of announcements over the weekend, from pensions to rough sleeping, so what have we learnt about the Budget on Wednesday – and about Burnhamism more generally?
Plus: a sign of hope or the wrong message – we discuss whether John Healey should drink at the despatch box.

Interestingly, not only has no presidential candidate who came in 2nd in the primaries ever turned it around and beat their opponent (since Brazil returned to democratic elections in 1985), but Lula won by a larger margin than his 2022 win. 52% to 48% in ‘26 vs 51% to 49% in ‘22.

Vučić’s defeat could mark a geopolitical turning point for Serbia. It could also inject fresh momentum into EU enlargement across the Western Balkans, where progress has stalled for years. A Serbia firmly anchored in Europe would transform the region’s outlook - and significantly weaken Russia’s influence

Louis Sarkozy, the son of the former President of France, says those who took part in the rioting and looting at the weekend have done more to boost Marine Le Pen's election chances than her own campaign staff, and that her strategy is to let France disintegrate.
