For @WIRED, I spoke with Macmillan and PRH staff about AI at the rest of the Big Five. I also spoke with bestselling authors who've gone to "war" with publishers over AI use and are now demanding disclosures and threatening to leave their publishers altogether.

Thanks to @AndrewOrlowski for interviewing me in his latest piece on the influence of Effective Altruism in the U.K. The British, unlike America, still have a chance to save themselves. telegraph.co.uk/gift/db93203…

Some people warned about tech fascism years ago and nobody listened to them. A woman wrote a book predicting this in 2000 called CyberSelfish. And she became blacklisted for it.

A young girl protesting sums up the situation: ‘I don’t understand why they tell us not to revolt’, she says, ‘when our curriculum is literally full of people who revolt — Arthur Rimbaud, La Boétie, Olympe de Gouges’.

In mainstream journalism, the idea that Western governments exist to serve their citizens is a dogma, a vow of intellectual abstinence required in return for progress up the promotional ladder. No amount of evidence to the contrary will unseat it because it's a decision, not an opinion or a belief. In this framework, civil unrest is always unwarranted, because it threatens to disrupt the only acceptable means of exercising democratic power

The attempt to frame the protests in France as centring on one single demand or another is part of the project to make them out to be illegitimate: if they are about fuel prices, the government has no control over that. If they are about school funding or cost of living, the government will propose some reforms. Problem solved, protestors can go away, and any who stay are criminals and antidemocratic outsiders.

But the protests aren't about one thing: they're against austerity budgets that ruin lives, against billionaires, against military buildup and warmongering, against the ability of police to kill with impunity; against the neglect of public schools while private education received billions in subsidies, and fundamentally against the idea that anyone in power has any intention of changing any of this
