But “The Speech” in Goldwater’s campaign is what got Reagan started. A lot of things had to happen to give us Reagan with a mandate from 1981-1989. Those eight years gave us an Indian summer of American greatness and extended the American Century by a generation.

The lesson has to be that the nominee (at least for President) of either major party can be elected, and so you want your opposition to nominate someone mainstream and sane (ideally, their best candidate). This would also apply to nominees for statewide office in purple states

The establishment of 2 mayors for 20 years got it right on crime in NYC. NB I knew personally the rich men there who did the work of rethinking the city and Trump was never no not once among them because he was too busy running failed casinos or boasting about sex to Page 6.

I agree. But your framing suggests that you believe the committee has gotten it right over the last fifty years.
Did the establishment get it right on crime? Judicial and penal reforms built on the supposition that criminals can be rehabilitated?
Did the establishment get it right on immigration? The notion that masses of people can be moved from anywhere in the world into the U.S. with positive results?
Did the establishment get it right on war and peace? The notion that the U.S. military and national security apparatus can turn countries like Iraq and Afghanistan into the next Germany and Japan?
Trump didn't come out of nowhere. His political rise was borne out of the multiple serial failures of the U.S. establishment over the past two decades and its ability to reform itself. So before you bash populism, pass some of that animus toward the establishment which abetted populism's rise.

Trump’s culpability regarding the effort to steal the 2020 election is far more wide-ranging than inciting a mob to riot. He and those around him had a concerted plan to steal votes, appoint phony electors, thwart the certification of the electoral college and much more.

The coercion of Pence was not through legal channels but failed because he refused to be depraved and dishonest like Trump and the others. Same with S of S in Georgia. And several other small time Republican office holders in key states had to stand up to thwart the plot.

We are down in the third quarter and the head coach only runs 3 plays, which have been stuffed all day. He fired assistant coaches in the first half and replaced them with grad assistants because the coaches kept trying to get him to run other plays. I know how the game ends.

A little too on the nose for this administration. 😂

There’s so much German heritage here in Fredericksburg, it’s crazy. We even met a few people who still speak German, although they told us they are the last generation to do so.
It was really cool to see how much effort people here put into preserving their German heritage. The history of the town and how it was founded by German settlers is also really fascinating. We visited a museum where we learned all about it. 🇩🇪🇺🇸

If universities cared about the well-being of their students--young women and men alike--they would cut it out with the the freshman orientation and "sexual health" programs that are nothing but propaganda for sexual liberationist ("sex-positivity") ideology and libertinism.

I'm baffled by what's happening at @CTmagazine. The layoffs, change of leadership and now this?
If you're going to publicly question a public figure's sexuality, especially someone who's passed, you better have solid evidence as a basis for it. CT didn't. Then, publishing, removing and republishing. 🤦🏻♀️ This certainly does not inspire trust in either the new or old guard.

Want the world to be more affordable? Follow Volcker and Reagan. Tighten credit until inflation is below the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Cut spending, taxes and regulations and grow the supply of goods and services. Restore deterrence and freedom of navigation in the Middle East. And remain steadfast in the face of economic and political trouble.

Maybe the tariffs were stupid all along?
US-owned steel plant with a plant in Middletown OH begins mass layoffs amid Trump tariffs:
In a memo sent by Cleveland-Cliffs to workers, the company explicitly linked the move to Trump's steel tariffs on Canada, which it said had "significantly shrunk the market" for its products.

Cleveland-Cliffs' layoffs (up to 500 workers) are at its Stelco plant in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, due to US tariffs on Canadian steel imports. Its Middletown, Ohio plant has no such layoffs and is receiving a $1B upgrade investment.

Cleveland-Cliffs is laying off workers at its Stelco steel plant in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, not in Middletown, Ohio. The company attributed the decision to U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel reducing its market. Its CEO has said he supports those tariffs.

Trump essentially lobotomized the GOP by recreating it in his own image. It is going to take a long time to fix.

A great weakness of Trump's is his admiration of dictators and despots in general and his decades-long man crush on Vladimir Putin in particular.
Trump loves flattery and loves to be flattered by strongmen, which makes him particularly susceptible to being manipulated by them.
