Canadian schools should teach the Haitian Revolution. Greater awareness of the remarkable slave uprising advances human liberation unlike educating kids about the Nazi Holocaust, which seems aimed at enabling colonial violence. Recently Burkina Faso introduced the Haitian revolution as part of its curriculum for grade 8 students. Canadian provinces should follow suit. The Haitian Revolution may be the greatest example of liberation in the history of humanity. From the grips of the most barbaric form of plantation economy, the largely African-born slaves delivered a massive blow to slavery, colonialism and white supremacy. The revolt rippled through the region and compelled the post-French Revolution government in Paris to abolish slavery in its Caribbean colonies. Between 1791 and 1804 ‘Haitians’ would defeat tens of thousands of French, British and Spanish troops (Washington backed France financially), leading to the world’s first and only successful large-scale slave revolution. The first nation of free people in the Americas, Haiti established a slave-free state 60 years before the USA’s emancipation proclamation. (It wasn’t until after this proclamation ending slavery that the US recognized Haiti’s independence.) The Haitian Revolution’s geopolitical effects were immense. It stimulated the and London’s 1807 Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. The revolutionary state also provided important support to South American independence movements. Currently, Canadian schools barely teach the Haitian Revolution. In what appears to be the most pronounced focus, British Columbia includes it among a handful of sample topics in the mandatory Social Studies 9 curriculum while in Ontario the Haitian Revolution is part of Grade 12 elective World History Since the Fifteenth Century. In Quebec and Alberta, teachers can include the Haitian Revolution when covering the Age of Enlightenment, the Atlantic slave trade, or global revolutions. Less than 10% of Canadian students likely learn about the Haitian Revolution at school. Conversely, education about the Nazi Holocaust is mandatory in most provinces. As part of efforts to justify Israeli barbarism, Holocaust education has grown sharply in recent years with Ontario even making it mandatory in grade 6 and 10. “As Holocaust education becomes mandatory in most of Canada, teachers adapt to new curricula” details the influence of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center and other Zionist organizations over Holocaust education. The September Canadian Jewish News article notes that the BC education ministry “accepted” the Zionist-run Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre “suggestion to base its 40-page Holocaust education guide on a guide made by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).” The IHRA is deeply anti-Palestinian. The Azrieli, Aspers and other billionaire foundations have promoted holocaust education in Canadian schools. They’ve also put up tens of millions of dollars — while convincing government to spend a hundred million dollars more — on a slew of Holocaust museums and monuments. As part of a “Holocaust Industry” that’s flourished since Norman Finkelstein wrote a book about it 25 years ago, Canada recently had a Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance. Additionally, the Israeli state also devotes significant attention to the Holocaust and there are dozens of Hollywood movies about it. Conversely, Haiti has a weak ideological apparatus, and Hollywood has never produced a major feature film about the Haitian Revolution (Famous actor Danny Glover spent decades trying to finance a major biopic about Haitian revolutionary Toussaint Louverture.) There are no billionaire foundations promoting Haitian Revolution education and Canada does not have a single national museum dedicated to the Haitian Revolution. Nor is Canada part of an International Haitian Revolution Remembrance Alliance. The dearth of attention to the Haitian Revolution is one reason it should be prioritized over holocaust education in schools. Another reason is that learning about the Haitian Revolution undercuts, rather than serves, imperial power. Haiti continues to be punished for its role in Black liberation and faces the wrath of US/Canadian imperialism. Most other Black majority nations also face significant racism and imperialism. While Canada’s Haitian population is about half size of the Jewish community, there are four times more Black people in Canada. Unlike the Jewish community, Black Canadians are on the wrong side of all widely employed socioeconomic indicators to measure racism (average pay, representations on corporate boards, incarceration rates, etc.). Canada played a far dirtier role in the Haitian Revolution than the fight against Hitler where it was ultimately on the right side. In a bid to crush the ex-slaves before their example spread to the English colonies, British forces based in current day Canada invaded Haiti in 1793. Much of the Halifax-based squadron arrived on the shores of the West Indies and many of the ships that set sail to the Caribbean at this time were assembled in the town’s naval yard. Several prominent Canadian-born (or based) individuals fought to capture and re-establish slavery in the French colonies. First lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe led British troops that reimposed slavery in Saint Domingue as part of an effort to seize the lucrative colony and suppress the Haitian Revolution. Toronto still celebrates Simcoe Day. Canadian provinces should follow Burkina Faso and make the Haitian Revolution part of the school curriculum.

Hi, I'm free. Beat up but fine. Police stole my phone. Settlers punched me in the face several times, likely broke @AdeleShoko's wrist and gave @the_andrey_x a concussion. They threatened to shoot us with an assault rifle over and over. Will tell the full story later, but for now, I just want to be clear about what happened. We witnessed two settlers locking a military gate in Umm al-Khair, blocking the only way to more than twenty Palestinian communities: trapping families inside, preventing students from reaching school and workers from their jobs, blocking delivery of food and access to ambulances, etc. It's a crime that the military has this ability at all--but last night, we discovered that random settler terrorists also have the key. We confronted them and began asking questions on camera, and they nearly murdered us for it. When the police finally arrived, they arrested Andrey and me and charged us with assault. The gate is still locked.

Israeli occupying forces blew up the family home of Lebanese journalist Radwan Mortada days as his investigative documentary exposing Israel's pager attacks gathered global popularity Now Israeli spies appear to be attempting to break into his phone
Yesterday, I received a security notification from Apple warning me that my iPhone had been targeted by a sophisticated mercenary spyware attack, involving technology of the kind developed by companies such as NSO Group, the Israeli firm behind the notorious Pegasus spyware. Perhaps the most alarming aspect of Apple’s warning was its confirmation that such attacks target specific individuals “because of who you are or what you do.” This is not the first time I have been targeted by spyware. I was previously targeted with Pegasus in both 2017 and 2021. I do not yet know who is behind this latest attack, or whether it is connected to my investigative documentary, The Trap, which I directed and co-produced. The film, available on Al Jazeera 360, exposed the details of the September 2024 pager explosions in Lebanon. What is certain, however, is that the targeting of journalists with sophisticated spyware poses a grave threat to press freedom, the confidentiality of journalistic sources, and the very foundations of independent investigative journalism.

The groundbreaking documentary by Lebanese journalist @radwanmortada about Israel’s pager attacks is now available for English speakers. 3 weeks after it was released, the Israelis looted and then blew up Radwan’s house. Tomorrow pro-Israel fanatics will release a propaganda film in U.S. theaters about the criminal pager attacks.

As Trump and Rubio's top enforcer in South America, Ecuador's Miami-made President Daniel Noboa has locked up his two top rivals on dubious charges Aquiles Alvarez was likely to be his top challenger, and now he's in what his wife describes as a concentration camp for political prisoners Meanwhile, Noboa is turning what was once the safest country in the region into a narco state with the full assistance of the US State Department and DEA
Ecuador's US-born, Trump-allied President Daniel Noboa has imprisoned the mayor of Ecuador's second largest city, Guayaquil, presidential prospect Aquiles Álvarez, in a 4 AM raid on his family home Just before his arrest, Alvarez announced his intention to present evidence of narco trafficking through Ecuador's ports under the watch of Noboa The political prisoner's wife, Fiorella Icaza, tells The Grayzone about the "concentration camp"-like conditions under which Álvarez is held, and reveals that she too is being targeted as she runs for mayor to continue his work

Israel allows 2 million Palestinians with Israeli citizenship (who did not become refugees in 1948) to vote and run for office while it denies that right to 6+ million it has kept under a brutal illegal occupation for nearly 60 years. That is not democracy. It is Apartheid.
Israel’s Arab citizens, men and women, are turning out in historic numbers to vote. They can vote, run for office, and serve in the Knesset, rights denied to many Arabs and women across much of the Middle East. Our critical ally in the fight against terror, Israel, is the only democracy in the region, and today shows it.

I am alive and free. Settlers tried to kill us because we caught them locking several Palestinian communities from leaving their homes - very illegally, even by Israeli occupation's laws. I'm concussed and very tired, so I'll tell the story tomorrow.

We have written to the CBC requesting a change to the misleading title of their article "Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran." What the investigation in the article confirms is that the shootings are linked by a multi-layered gun-for-hire network. What is not established through the facts in the article is any concrete link to Iran. Instead, this appears to be entirely in reference to intelligence reports from Canada (CSIS), the FBI, and the UK, which have raised concerns regarding alleged Iranian-linked plots against Jewish-Canadians. These reports themselves originate from an American federal court complaint which alleges that two attacks in Canada were ordered by an Iraqi national named Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi with potential links to Iran, who had been arrested in Turkey and extradited to the United States. The complaint cites multiple conversations between al-Saadi and an undercover FBI agent. These are allegations based on undercover FBI operations, not criminal findings. Given the fact that the courts have not decided on a verdict, there is still no conclusive evidence connecting Iran to the shootings in Canada. Unfortunately, the article does not discuss the unconfirmed status of these allegations, but appears to treat them as sufficient evidence to support the article’s thesis, as reflected in the article’s title. Reporting this as “likely” based on the evidence to date unfortunately adds fuel to rising Islamophobia in Canada, whose proponents use these anti-Iran conspiracies to normalize and justify anti-Muslim hate.
Today CBC published an article with the headline: “Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran.” I was intrigued, as there has been almost 0 evidence offered for this claim thus far. Unfortunately this article doesn’t offer any either, adding nothing new. CBC says they spent weeks on the investigation, so these are pretty pitiful results, at least in terms of finding evidence of who paid for the shootings. I’m not sure why they feel comfortable with such a declarative headline given the lack of evidence (other than journalistic standards going out the window when the subject is an Official Enemy country). Also, CBC and other journalists continue platforming police claims that they need backdoor access to messaging apps to solve these shootings, with no push back or critique about how these powers can be abused, including against journalists. cbc.ca/news/investigates/ira…

SCOOP: Nadia Beller, the Bolivian whistleblower who survived an assassination attempt ordered by Trump associate and political operative Fernando Cerimedo, tells me authorities are seeking to arrest her as soon as Friday. According to sources within the Bolivian government and police, the case will argue that her (brave) testimony against Cerimedo’s crimes—which range from U.S. backed election interference to drug trafficking—is evidence she had prior knowledge and failed to report. Beller, a lawyer herself, cites multiple legal grounds for immunity and says this is an obvious attempt to silence her for exposing a corruption network spanning from Washington DC to Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, and beyond. Beller’s whistleblowing prompted investigations in Argentina and Chile, including a congressional commission probing Cerimedo. The Bolivian attorney general who arrested and charged Cerimedo with femicide for the attack on Beller was sanctioned by the U.S. and later detained by Bolivian authorities. Beller says she fears for her life and the life of her unborn child, which Cerimedo allegedly fathered. She is calling on the international community to support her in the face of political lawfare, attempted femicide, and state repression. Please share far and wide.
