The tabloids have invented this alternate-universe Britain where you phone the DWP, tell them you’ve got a peanut allergy or a sore finger, and suddenly they’re paying your rent and buying you a free car - and somehow, people believe that’s how it actually works.

looking back to 2001 and it’s cool just how crap the future we’ve been presented is. everyone’s skint, every interaction with public services has layers of frustration and friction and there’s trash everywhere. but on the other hand i can ask a robot to make me a shitty pub flyer

Matthew Goodwin is like an anthropologist who decides to join the tribe that has spent years studying, and who tries to ingratiate himself among the longstanding members of the tribe by speaking their native language, but sounds off-key bc he keeps on getting the cadences wrong.
Reform has ended up developing a brand of politics that will consolidate its base - but digust so many others as to rule out the prospect of power. Even coalition. My Times column on what we learned at its Birmingham conference: times-comment.com/far11

The right just have an absurdly high bar for what they consider racism, they've never quite grasped the way normal people use it to describe a spectrum of discrimination, and think it should basically be reserved for maybe Hitler. Possibly the KKK at a push
Do folks realize that it is not 2020 anymore and that you can't just call people you don't know or understand but seem to disagree with "racist"? It's just not how adults are supposed to resolve their disagreements. Cambridge is already an embarrassment. No need to add to it.

(Cut to night time. Alone in his study, a brooding Lord Sugar angrily dismisses his butler. “Leave me to my games, I need distraction,” he booms, stewing over a tweet on his phone reading ‘Can you name this vegetable?’ He chuckles mirthlessly. “That’s garlic.”)
First match if season . Smiling before the game. Hope to be smiling after.

My dad was into jungian psychoanalysis, so when I watched Looney Tunes as a child I kept waiting for Bugs Bunny, embodying the trickster archetype, to shapeshift into an insect as half of his name suggests. He never did, perhaps in that way I was tricked. My mom was an alcoholic,

Is this the first time that the World Cup final will have been contested between players who have bathed each other?
Still looking forward to Sunday night.

Half the Wilburys songs are like “I’m old and lonely but I still have a lot of love to give” and the other half are like “specifically I mean there are a lot of sexual things I would like to try.”

Keir Starmer may not have been the best Prime Minister we’ve ever had, but was he an efficient administrator who tackled the tough issues during a difficult period? not really. But was he at least someone who endeared himself to the public via a personal sense of charm? Also no.

'I inherited a Labour party that was politically, financially and morally bankrupt' said Keir Starmer. It shows he has hated not just the Left, but the whole party. Far from saving it, he has led it to its worst results for more than one hundred years.
