What makes a candidate stand out in an interview? Walmart Chief People Officer Donna Morris shared three qualities she looks for: alignment with the company's purpose and values, resilience and versatility and a genuine desire to make a difference. In an interview with Business Insider, Morris emphasized the value of learning from real-world experiences, including frontline work, and how those experiences shape a person's approach to leadership. She also asks candidates what former colleagues or employees would say about working with them, helping reveal their character and leadership style. For job seekers, the takeaway is to prepare specific examples that demonstrate adaptability, service and the lessons learned through challenging experiences. Employers also use interviews to understand how candidates approach teamwork, responsibility and meaningful contributions.

Artificial intelligence changes the skills organizations need from their human resources teams. A study by workforce intelligence platform Draup found HR roles are increasingly divided into two profiles: technology-focused strategists and compliance-focused operators. The research also found that data analytics skills appear across HR positions, from specialists to chief human resources officers. As routine administrative tasks become more automated, HR professionals need stronger capabilities in workforce analytics, technology governance, employment law and compliance. For employers, updating HR job descriptions and investing in employee development helps ensure teams are equipped for the evolving demands of the profession.

A strong workplace culture weakens gradually when employees lose trust, stop sharing ideas or become disconnected from company values. HRMorning identifies warning signs of what it calls “culture rot,” including increased cynicism, reduced collaboration, slipping standards and the departure of high-performing employees. These issues affect engagement, productivity and an organization's ability to retain talent. Leaders handle by checking in with employees regularly, creating safe opportunities for honest feedback and addressing concerns before they become entrenched. A healthy culture requires more than stated values. It depends on consistent leadership behavior, accountability and a willingness to adapt as workforce needs change.

Job switching resulted in up to an 18% pay increase in 2022, but Bank of America Institute’s analysis found the changing job market led to lower raises. The average salary increases for those who changed jobs fell to 8% in the first quarter of 2026. During this same time period, employers became more wary of applicants perceived as serial job hoppers and were 19% less likely to be offered jobs.

Data center buildouts contribute to thousands of jobs beyond construction sites, based on U.S. Chamber of Commerce findings. A mid-sized data center project supports an estimated 10,600 total jobs; 5,220 in the area where it's being built and 5,380 jobs elsewhere in the U.S. through the servers and materials production. Facility development also contributes to ongoing employment, local business activity and economic growth. Further, a 20-year operating period would be responsible for 740 jobs each year. The average data center industry wage is $201,604, compared to $82,368 in other sectors.

AI impacted the workforce, and the U.S. Census Bureau found recent graduates felt a negative impact. Roughly 29% of those who received bachelor's degrees between 2016 and 2024 felt impacts. Since ChatGPT's debut in November 2022, there was a 5% employment drop and a 13% initial earnings decrease. As AI tools are implemented to handle tasks traditionally done by entry-level employees, early-career professionals face increased challenges.

Seeing AI as part of job interviews caused over a third of job seekers to walk away from the position, according to a Greenhouse survey. 38% withdrew from hiring processes because AI was part of an interview. The research showed 33% abandoned the process if AI was used without a human present, while 27% left if prospective employers didn’t share how AI would be used.

Advancing technologies could force millions of U.S. workers to change jobs by 2035, as new McKinsey Global Institute data found which jobs could face career changes. AI and automation technologies could reduce worker demand by 21%, the equivalent of 36 million jobs. Further, 11 million workers might need to transition into different occupations. Agriculture, administrative support, food services and transportation are among the sectors facing potential disruptions. However, McKinsey also projected economic growth and emerging industries could create more than 40 million jobs during the same time frame.

Political and economic uncertainty influences how organizations approach hiring, with some employers considering whether to delay recruitment until after the election. HR Dive reports hiring managers are weighing the timing of recruitment amid uncertainty about the business environment and future policy changes. While waiting may offer more time to assess conditions, prolonged delays make it difficult to fill critical positions, maintain productivity and prepare for future growth. Employers respond by identifying essential roles, reviewing projected skills needs and separating immediate staffing requirements from longer-term hiring decisions. Strategic workforce planning helps businesses remain adaptable without losing sight of the talent needed to meet their goals.
