Baffled by this Burnham notion that reopening the Brexit saga is the solution to ten years of "too much division.” The efforts by those who spent a good part of that decade simply ignoring the result or cheating to try reverse it poisoned the well in the first place.

Andy Burnham doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. He's just told the BBC that our energy crisis has its roots in the privatisation of energy in the 1980s onwards. Actually energy prices for households and businesses FELL in the years following privatisation. And the supply of domestically produced gas and oil rose because of North Sea Oil drilling. Britain is harder hit by global energy price hikes due to the Ukraine and Iran wars because of our own governments' mad Net Zero policies. If he won't abandon Net Zero, our energy prices won't come down.

The dogmatic obsession with the EU really is a bizarre feature of the modern Labour Party -- completely out of step with its history and, I would argue, any frank recognition of what's been happening (or about to happen) in the EU itself. The idea that we *must* be in the EU (and give up national economic planning powers) to grow betrays such a lack of imagination about economic policy. – at Winsford, England
Moving closer to the EU is “essential” to “stand proud in the world and secure growth”, says minister Bridget Phillipson. “It was over ten years ago now that our country voted for Brexit. It hasn't delivered the benefits that were promised." @BPhillipsonMP @JPonPolitics

Andy Burnham isn't Keir Starmer with a northern accent. He's Jeremy Corbyn with a northern accent. He's taking Labour and the country down a truly dark path.

And when, in a few months and years, nothing has changed at all, except the cost of living and taxes have gone up even more, the welfare bill has ballooned, the Channel migrants are still coming and still here, and there is no change to social care, while the threats from Russia and Iran escalate and we face energy rationing, I'm sure that Andy Burnham's fine rhetoric will be very useful on the cold winter nights. Don't say you weren't warned.
I’m getting emails from those on the right who were bowled over by A Burnham’s speech. Eg ‘I thought it was utterly magnificent.. By the time it finished, I had concluded it was the best speech I have ever heard by any politician’. The emailer voted Reform at the last election.

In 1997 the Tories bequeathed New Labour: - 3.5% GDP growth - 4.5% wage growth - 4.6% manufacturing output growth - Energy independence and falling energy prices - A brand new nuclear power station (1995) - New reservoirs (1992) - Construction of Manchester airport's second runway - Falling unemployment - London as the world’s leading foreign-exchange centre - A newly opened Channel Tunnel - Debt at just 37% of GDP - On track for a balanced budget Andy Burnham just said that this was failure. Somehow.

Burnham's Labour hasn't got a single policy, not one, that addresses the fundamental problems Britain faces. Instead we get a care policy that's a con, a housing policy where no houses are built, an infrastructure policy without any new infrastructure. But two quid bus fares.

And rigging the voting system against a party you don’t like is pretty likely to boost support for them. Progressives really have a job comprehending how others outside their salons think
First past the post is the only system under which Nigel Farage could form an unchecked majority government.

Rejoining the single market would restore more frictionless trade which, ceteris paribus, should aid economic growth, tho by how much is hard to discern. But there are costs. Above all Brussels regulation, which inhibits high-tech and made the EU something of an AI backwater. Whereas the UK is 3rd in the world re AI and has more unicorns (high-tech start ups worth £1bn+ each) than the next three biggest European markets combined. So that would inhibit growth (and about 25% of our growth comes from high tech these days). The net would certainly be nothing like enough to generate enough revenues to pay for the massive tax cuts E Davey is calling for.
You argue that low growth in the Eurozone means that we wouldn't benefit from joining the single market. I think that removal of non tariff barriers for better access to over 400 million customers would boost growth in the UK. That is why we built the single market to start with.

What the hell is happening?
I spent over two decades in counterterrorism and I’m still involved in many ways, so here are my views on what I see has happened over the past 24-36 hours in the UK: Five British men in their twenties were arrested on Sunday near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives offences and the preparation of a terrorist act. On Monday they were released on police bail. That’s not what the terrorism clock looks like when the investigators are still in charge of it. Under ordinary UK criminal law a suspect can be held for 24 hours, stretched to 36 by a superintendent, and to 96 hours by a magistrate. But under section 41 of the Terrorism Act the first hold is 48 hours, not 24 hours. A judge can then extend it, in stages, up to 14 days without a charge. If the case merits it, it can even be pushed to 28 days. That 14-day cap exists for exactly this kind of file of vans, an airbase the United States uses, a possible foreign hand, explosives (if there were any) and interviews that are not finished on the first night. Counter-terrorism police said the inquiry isn’t over. They said conditions apply. They said a state link has not been ruled out. Those sentences he said only make sense if the evidence trail was still live. A live trail is why Parliament built the two-week window. But watching the guy read out the statement showed me in his body language, tone and eye movements that releasing those five men was NOT his or his department’s decision. Walking five men after roughly a day is what you do with a pub fight, not with a suspected terrorist attack on a bomber base. I’ve sat in enough interrogation rooms to know the difference between a custody clock and a political ceiling. Nobody had to shout an order down a phone. Someone in the political building above the investigators decided that charging British nationals on Monday, with Iran already denying it, Washington watching the runway, and a Labour conference where the main topics of discussion were prioritizing Palestinian and other refugees settling in the UK, was uglier than bail and a holding statement. The law allowed them to keep the door shut. Yet the door opened anyway in half of the most minimum time. That’s the story. That for me is the only story here. Not “they were innocent.” Not “the case collapsed.” The statute was not exhausted, but the appetite was. The real question is who, and most importantly, why?

What is actually incredible is that, because Israel took so many different actions to warn people and reduce civilian casualties, only ~ 3% of Gazans were killed, and ~ half of those were terrorists. The IDF has conducted the most ethical, civilian-centered war in history. w.

Israel came and took the nice things away - which is what tends to happen when you fuck with them. All they had to do was not launch an orgy of rape and murder and they would still have all the nice things. Israel, though, moved all the civilians it could out of the way before doing this. Nobody else would have shown them that mercy. All in all, they got off pretty lightly.

I have been ranting for such a long time that the influx of Islamists into the country, aided and abetted by the hard-left and their accomplices in the charity sector, is becoming an existential crisis. The far-left who cheerlead Islamist entryism because of their extreme privilege and lack of having a big fat Jewish ethnic minority target on their back are putting Jewish lives in extreme danger. And, obviously, once they are done with us Christians, LGBT groups etc are next on the hit list. This is so obvious to anyone with a brain cell but the amount of people who refuse to reckon with it is so depressing.
