I still think communications is dramatically underpriced as a competitive moat. You can listen to ten CEOs talk and maybe 1 of them has really done the work in building a compelling, unique narrative.
People underestimate how much a startup = narrative.

We need to have more respect for PR & comms.
It is not fluffy marketing BS that can be handed to an agency or intern.
If done right, it can move the needle for your company.
It will reach investors, talent, and customers.
Do not half-ass it, if done right, it is worth it.

I am always astounded by Founders that turn down large media opportunities.
Brand and speaking “may not be for you.”
But I promise the customers you want, the engineers you need, the VCs you will pitch, they will listen.
Media and brand is a muscle, time to start building.

Brand is underestimated.
There’s value in driving traffic. There’s value in amazing CTRs on ads. There’s value in brilliant automation.
But a solid & trusted brand makes everything easier.
Many early stage B2B companies underestimate brand and overestimate hacks.

"Why now" is my favorite part of every startup story, and yet it's often skipped. It's the connective tissue to your broader context: what has changed about the world (technological, economic, behavioral, etc) that makes this problem solvable and your solution possible?

I came across some advice for aspiring #socialmedia marketers on linkedIn, and while I'm not fully in disagreement with the premise of the post, I thought I'd share a little bit of my advice.
For context, here is the post (open the thread for my added commentary):

I think most startups underinvest in brand marketing.
There’s a lot of value to seeming bigger than you are, keeping a constant drumbeat of awareness, building communities, and telling compelling stories.
Often underinvested in because people focus too much on short term ROI.

If you interact with brands regularly on Twitter, there’s a 100% chance that at some point, a social media manager has replied to you on their day off, during meals with their families, on vacation, while sick or any number of times when they really shouldn’t be working.
Be kind.
