🗣 Luka Modrić on the 2018 World Cup final: "When I was a kid I daydreamed about becoming the best. When this dream came true, while I was lifting that Golden Ball, the only feeling I had was sadness. It should have been the happiest moment of my career, but it wasn't. We lost the final. I tried not to look at the trophy, but I couldn't. It was heartbreaking. For a moment I imagined them handing me that trophy. I would have raised it to the sky, we would have shouted together. How nice that would have been... I ceased to exist after the final whistle vs France. Someone told me I had been chosen as the best player of the tournament. They explained to me what to do, I couldn't memorize anything. I was looking for a place to hide as soon as possible to break down and cry. My teammates helped me not to break down emotionally. I tried not to cry and stay focused. The whole world was watching me and I couldn't afford to ridicule myself, my friends and my country. When I was on the podium the memory of my grandfather Luka crossed my mind. How happy and proud of me he would have been if he could have witnessed the realization of my dreams! I was 6 when they killed him not far from home..." [My Game]
