Thank you to everyone who joined ADL Central Pacific and Temple Isaiah to celebrate California's new Safe Worship Zone Act (AB 2664) with Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan and Rabbi Jill Perlman. Everyone deserves to worship safely and freely. #SafeWorshipZone

THREE YEARS. Three years since the moment my life changed forever. Even now, it feels so unreal that sometimes I still can’t fully comprehend that I was kidnapped and taken to Gaza. Sometimes it feels like it was all just a nightmare I somehow woke up from. But at the same time, the pain is always here. It never really leaves, and sometimes, it only gets stronger. This year, when I went to visit the graves of my friends, I felt like it had somehow become even harder. Maybe because the hostages are finally home. Maybe because I’m no longer part of that fight. Or maybe because everyone else has already graduated, moved to Tel Aviv, and started their careers. And you remain there, like a memory from another life. A life that was innocent, young, and happy. A group of friends simply enjoying life, dreaming big, with no idea how quickly everything could change. I miss you every single day. With every step I take, on every path I choose, I find myself wondering what it would be like if you were still here beside me. As more time passes, I realize that soon, more time will have passed since we lost you than the amount of time I actually had the chance to know you. And that is something I still can’t accept. To me, you are always with me. And for those of us who have lost someone we love, it isn’t easy to watch the world keep moving when some people’s lives simply stopped. It isn’t easy to live with the guilt of being the ones who are still here. But we have to keep going, because that is what they would have wanted for us. We have to learn to live alongside the pain. Embrace it. Forgive it. Understand it. But at the same time, keep looking forward. Give yourself permission to LIVE.

Today, I join our neighbors at Jewish Silicon Valley in Los Gatos and the @ofjcc in Palo Alto to mourn and remember the more than 1,200 men, women, and children murdered in Israel on October 7th, and the many taken hostage by Hamas. Three years later, that pain endures in the rise of hate at home and abroad and the devastating toll of the war that followed. We must continue to confront terrorism, antisemitism, and hate in all its forms.

Today, on the third anniversary of the October 7th massacre, we mourn those murdered by Hamas terrorists and stand in solidarity with the survivors, their loved ones, and all Jewish communities. We also mourn the lives lost and communities decimated in the years since. May we strive for lasting peace and continue to combat hate and violence in all its forms.

California will forever mourn the lives stolen by terrorists on October 7, and the immense carnage that has followed in the years since. May all who call the region home know the peace, security, and healing every human being deserves.

Three years ago today, Hamas terrorists mercilessly attacked men, women, and children in Israel in what was the deadliest assault on Jews since the Holocaust. Today, we mourn the more than 1,200 killed and those taken hostage and their families. We continue to honor them and the innocent lives taken in the war that followed by standing up against terrorism, antisemitism, and hate.

Three years ago, the world watched Hamas carry out a horrific and heinous terrorist attack on Israel. Today, we mourn those murdered in the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust and stand with the survivors and families whose lives were forever changed. America must support a just and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians.

Three years ago, Israel was the victim of a terrorist attack by Hamas that killed nearly 1,200 civilians. Innocent lives were snuffed out, families murdered in cold blood, women raped, young people targeted because of who they are and where they called home. But the violence of that day did not end on October 8. Its violence was contagious, plunging the region into chaos and years of war that have taken a toll on many thousands of people — Palestinians and Israelis. Israeli civilians were held hostage in dark tunnels by Hamas for hundreds of days, while being subject to rape, torture and murder. Palestinian civilians lost their lives as whole neighborhoods were destroyed, and they continue to endure, unimaginable conditions in Gaza; Palestinians still suffer increased violence and displacement in the West Bank. Civilians in Israel still live in fear of another promised attack by Hamas terrorists, and civilians in Northern Israel or Lebanon worry about being collateral damage in the continuing struggle between Israel and Hezbollah. After three years, the pathway to peace and a lasting two-state solution is farther out of reach and tattered, while extremist voices have flourished in the Middle East. This anniversary should be a solemn moment to recommit to the goal of two sovereign states, and rebuilding the pathway to that future. Just as we pushed to bring hostages home and achieve a ceasefire, we must continue to push for expanded aid to rebuild Gaza, for an end to Hamas’ ability to threaten Israel, and for a lasting agreement to end this conflict and ensure that Israelis and Palestinians may live side by side in peace, security, dignity, and mutual recognition.

✍️ Governor Newsom just signed AB 1763 (Lee) into law! California students will now get a guaranteed excused absence for a religious holiday – rather than requiring principal approval – aligning it with standards for illness, mental health, and cultural or civic events. Thank you to Governor Newsom, Assemblymember Lee, and the 59 Jewish organizations in support for standing up for every student’s right to observe their faith. #JewishCalifornia

✍️ Governor Newsom just signed AB 395 (Gabriel), making it California law! K-12 schools, colleges, and state agencies must now avoid scheduling major events on religious holidays – and the state has officially recognized Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, and other faiths’ holidays in law for the first time. Thank you to Governor Newsom, Assemblymember Gabriel, and the 62 Jewish organizations for seeing this through. #JewishCalifornia

✍️ Governor Newsom invited Jewish Caucus and Jewish California leaders to stand alongside him as he signed two landmark bills into law at the historic Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles. AB 2664 (Bauer-Kahan), the Safe Worship Zone Act, protects congregants of every faith from harassment and intimidation outside their houses of worship, while safeguarding protest rights. AB 1836 (Gabriel) expands nonprofit security grants to cover events in public spaces – menorah lightings, festivals, Pride celebrations, and more. Standing in a sanctuary that has both opened its arms to the local community for over a century yet was victim to a hateful protest barring people from entry just this past year, it was a powerful reminder of why this work matters: every Californian deserves to gather and pray without fear. Thank you to Governor Newsom, Assemblymembers Bauer-Kahan and Gabriel, our co-sponsors at ADL, JCRC Bay Area, Jewish Federation LA, and Equality California, and the dozens of organizations across faiths who got these bills across the finish line. #JewishCalifornia

David Bocarsly, CEO of Jewish California, and Senator Henry Stern, author of SB 1387, cowrote this op-ed in Newsweek. SB 1387 codifies that Jewish identity is an ethnicity – in addition to a religion – and ensures it is captured when the state collects ethnicity data. @HenrySternCA @davidbocarsly newsweek.com/you-dont-have-t…

Two things are true: 1. American Jews and our connections to Israel are becoming an antisemitic purity test in progressive politics. People are campaigning on our backs. 2. Settler violence is bad, and must be condemned by pro-Israel orgs, regardless of what happened to Ro.
JCRC STATEMENT: Rep. @RoKhanna's West Bank Visit and Relationship with the Jewish Community JCRC Bay Area is closely following reports of Congressman Ro Khanna’s encounter with West Bank settlers. This story is raising questions and concerns across the Jewish community, especially in his Silicon Valley district. While there are many conflicting accounts of what exactly transpired, no elected official – nor any Palestinian civilian for that matter – should be subject to unlawful actions by settlers. JCRC has been clear that violence by Israeli extremists in the West Bank is an unacceptable violation of Jewish values that undermines Israel’s security and democracy, and is rejected by the overwhelming majority of Israelis and Jewish Americans alike. While criticism of government policies is both legitimate and necessary in any liberal democracy, and these issues must be addressed, the existence of such challenges should not be used as a pretext to delegitimize Israel. Nor should the actions of a small minority be conflated with all Israelis. In public polling, JCRC found that the vast majority of Bay Area Jews (89 percent) support Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, even though we also found widespread dissatisfaction with the current Israeli government (75 percent). In joint meetings with Jewish Silicon Valley and the Bay Area Jewish Coalition, JCRC has conveyed our concerns to the Congressman in how he is representing the district and our community on foreign policy issues. Additionally, JCRC and our partners have discussed pressing issues related to antisemitism with the congressman. We shared increasing concerns that his repeated use of the phrase “Epstein class,” and attacks on AIPAC as a shadowy organization, are being used by antisemitic individuals and groups to further conspiracy theories that harm the Jewish community. We are also concerned by his support for candidates with antisemitic records. He was a vocal champion of Maine Democratic senatorial candidate Graham Platner, even after his Nazi tattoo was uncovered, and New York DSA congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, who, among many shocking actions, attended post-October 7th celebrations of Hamas’ atrocities. At a time when antisemitism is increasingly becoming normalized, we call on Congressman Khanna to exercise the same urgency he has brought to criticizing Israel to address the hostile climate many Jewish Americans face every day, and commit to advancing key legislation that would strengthen Jewish community security. We continue to welcome the opportunity to work together with the Congressman on concrete actions that advance those goals, as well as a shared future in the Middle East where Palestinians and Israelis alike can live with peace, security, and dignity.

Yesterday, AB 1853 passed the Senate Judiciary Committee. This bill makes sure that hate speech is not spread through California’s official voter guides. Next stop, Senate Appropriations.
