Northwestern University head football coach David Braun is the most recent prominent sports figure to spotlight the failure of legalizing commercialized sports gambling across the country: "I’m telling you what, I got 11-year-old and 9-year-old boys at home and I am terrified of how addictive gambling is... It’s predatory. It’s messed up what’s going on. You look at 18-25 year old young men out there right now and the predatory nature of this stuff—it’s really scary."

The Texas Lottery cannot be reformed. It must be abolished. It's time to end taxation by exploitation.

Election prediction markets claim they become more accurate over time as more information is processed. However, new data from the @Accountable_Org reveals that Kalshi’s election prediction markets actually became less accurate and overconfident in the final week before the 2026 primaries. Front-runner odds were found to be overconfident by 7.3 percentage points, a very significant margin in politics, while underdogs pulled off 30% more upsets than the market predicted. Despite their claims that real-time betting improves upon traditional polling, this report shows that election prediction markets are anything but accurate.

Braun's preface is so revealing: "I might get myself in trouble with this one." WHY? Stop and think: A college coach feels risky saying A) he's not paying attention to betting odds, and B) young people should be careful with gambling. But he's not wrong to walk on egg shells, or at least not alone. For my book, then for the season of a @CBC podcast I hosted (out now!), it was striking how people in sports are so nervous about saying anything that might challenge the business of gambling. When I tried to interview a university athletic director—who declined—word got back to me that he felt too nervous about upsetting the wrong person to answer questions about gambling policy and how it affects students. This culture of intimidated silence is a real problem.

In 2014, @NBA Commissioner Adam Silver claimed that bringing sports betting "into the sunlight" would make it safer and easier to monitor. But after 39 states legalized it, an epidemic of gambling addiction and federal investigations into player prop manipulation forced the NBA to concede that the experiment was a major policy failure when it decided to ban easily manipulated wagers. Yet that hasn't stopped them from double-dipping. In May 2025, the NBA warned the @CFTC about the severe risks of sports prediction markets yet 17 months later, the league named @Kalshi and @Polymarket its preferred sports betting partner.

As Election Day draws nearer, the Nebraska Catholic Bishops issued the following joint statement against online sports gambling, urging all Nebraskans to vote against Initiatives 440 and 441: "We urge Nebraskans, especially Catholics, to vote ‘Against’ Initiatives 440 and 441. These measures would expand predatory online sports gambling in our state. False promises of small property tax relief do not outweigh the serious social problems these initiatives would cause Nebraskans. Online sports gambling often targets people who are vulnerable to addiction, especially young men and teenagers. This can lead to family problems, debt, bankruptcy, homelessness, and mental health issues. Online sports gambling isn’t a harmless wager among friends. It turns every part of a game – play call, free throw, serve, or a pitch – into a bet where the house always wins, which harms sports and student-athletes. Let's not turn every phone into a casino. Please vote ‘Against’ Initiatives 440 and 441." Read more from the Nebraska Catholic Conference on their website: necatholic.org/resources/sto…

Prediction market platforms Kalshi and Polymarket have contributed millions to political groups in this election, "to get legislators to look the other way." --@LesBernal with @SPGambling Guest host: @JodyHiceFRCA

Over the past four years alone, Nebraskan citizens have lost more than $850 million of their own personal wealth to casinos and the lottery. The number of Nebraskans seeking treatment for gambling addiction has surged by 137% over the past seven years—a spike driven largely by casino expansion. Now just imagine putting a casino in every Nebraskan's pocket. Legalizing online sports betting in Nebraska will drive up rates of suicide, depression, bankruptcy, and broken marriages, and tear families apart just as we’ve seen in states that have made this mistake before.

"How do you sell a product that the public intuitively knows is bad for them? You follow a playbook that someone has used with success before you." - @asaparked Congress needs to ban commercialized gambling advertising just like it does for other known dangerous and addictive products.

New Jersey is one of the nation's biggest predatory gambling states. The result of their public policy has been such a failure that state officials were forced to step in. State officials were recently forced to step in with what they described as, "Mandatory Data-Driven Responsible Gambling Requirements." In their official announcement, state officials went so far as to label licensed operators "unscrupulous"—proving they recognize the devastation being done to local communities yet the state continues to let them operate as business as usual.

FanDuel laid bare the predatory reality of the commercialized sports betting industry yet again by offering free zoo entry, face painting, and snacks to its VIP members and their families—normalizing predatory gambling for children. If a tobacco company sponsored "Boo at the Zoo" to normalize smoking for children, public outrage would be instant. Psychiatrist Frank James put it best: “We need to look at what we learned in the past and apply it to gambling… If Boo at the Zoo was sponsored by a tobacco company, we would have a different reaction to it… The event is reminiscent of how the tobacco industry found creative ways to market tobacco and cigarettes to adolescents.” Using family-friendly events to normalize an addictive product for kids is criminal. Lawmakers must act now and ban all gambling VIP programs immediately.
