In a global assessment of global river deltas, researchers uncovered a scaling relationship between channel length and land-building extent that echoes the so-called “Hack’s law” in river networks. Learn more this week in Science: scim.ag/4cVFTNZ

During summer, sediment-laden water flows through the branching channel networks of the Yukon River delta in western Alaska, spreading into Norton Sound and depositing sediment thereabouts. The channelized flows and their spreading pattern exhibit a scaling relation between length and area observed across deltas worldwide, which suggests a universal rule for delta growth that resembles Hack’s law for river networks in upstream watersheds.
